Lionel Messi Statue Destroyed In Argentina

A statue of Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi has been vandalised in his homeland, according to reports in Argentina.

All that is left of the statue of the five-time World Player of the Year are his legs and a ball.

The statue was officially unveiled in June 2016 in Buenos Aires, just days after Messi announced he would be retiring from international football following Argentina's defeat by Chile in the Copa America final.

The loss was Argentina's third straight final heartbreak following defeats to Germany and Chile in 2014 World Cup and Copa America 2015.

After pleas from ex-internationals and fans, Messi eventually rescinded his decision.

On Monday, Messi lost The Best FIFA Men's Player Award for 2016 to Portugal and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.

He also lost the 2016 Ballon D'or award to Ronaldo.
