Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has admitted he doesn't know if David De Gea will be at Old Trafford next season.
De Gea's future at the Theatre of Dreams is in major doubt as he has refused to sign a new deal with the Red Devils.
Spanish juggernauts Real Madrid are understood to be keen on acquiring the former Atletico star this summer.
Real boss Carlo Ancelotti is a huge admirer of the 24-year-old and is reportedly willing to smash the record transfer fee for a goalkeeper in order to get his hands on the United ace.
Van Gaal wants to retain the Spanish international's services this summer but has admitted he can't promise that United's star performer of the season will be at Old Trafford next season.
He said: "No, I cannot [promise that he’ll be here next summer].
"But a transfer is a process, involving a player, a club and his present club.
"He has to choose. It's not easy to choose between two great clubs.
"He's Spanish and his girlfriend is Spanish, so we would be very happy if he stays."
