Obafemi Martins scored a goal and an assist as his MLS side Seattle Sounders started the new season with a 3-0 victory over New England Revolution on Sunday night.
The Nigeria striker scored his side’s second goal in the 41st minute following an assist by his strike partner,Clint Dempsey.
He then assisted Dempsey for the third goal in the 66th minute.
The assist that Martins provided was on Dempsey’s second goal and Seattle’s third of the match, which has already become a goal-of-the-year candidate for the
brilliant buildup play that led up to the American finding the back of the net.
Thereafter Martins spoke on chemistry with Dempsey compared to last year: “This is what we’ve (been) doing since last year, same thing in preseason. We’ve never stopped doing our thing but at the end of the day we did very well as a team and we’re very happy (with the three points.”
Martins also spoke revealed why he decided to give Dempsey the pas for the American’s second goal of the game (and Sounders’ third on the night).
‘I think, yeah, I can do it, but Clint is there. So I just played it and scored so we can win. IT was me and the goalkeeper one on one, so I don’t want to risk. (The pass from Pappa) was a good pass.He sold me way before he took the ball and he gave me a good pass and I gave it to Clint and he finished up so well.”.
Dempsey along with fellow American international Jozy Altidore were the only two players to score multiple goals on the weekend, while Obafemi Martins was the only player on the weekend to score a goal and provide an assist.Watch The Premier League Live!! with EXPRESSVPN the #1 Trusted Name in VPN
