Mikel Blames “Luck” For Olympic Eagles Loss To Germany, Targets Bronze

Nigeria captain Mikel Obi has blamed his side's Rio 2016 men's football event semi-final defeat to Germany on "luck".

The Germans absolutely outclassed the Olympic Eagles on Wednesday in winning 2-0 as they set up a final with hosts Brazil.

But Mikel will not accept the Germans' clear superiority.

"We gave everything last night but luck wasn't on our side," the Chelsea star tweeted on Thursday.

"We will keep going for bronze, to make Nigeria proud."

Nigeria play Honduras for the bronze medal on Saturday, before Brazil and Germany face off for gold.

  1. What a lame excuse! They just didn’t play. Is it luck that gave such room to the German players to play which the Germans won’t give with two or three of them on any Nigerian player with the ball? That isn’t luck but strategy and quality of fitness. I doubt if anyone in that team is younger than Mikel…
