Following Friday's 1-1 draw against Egypt in Kaduna and Chad's withdrawal from the qualifiers, the chances of the Super Eagles
qualifying for next year's Africa Cup of Nations look very slim.
To stand a chance of making it to Gabon, the Eagles must beat Egypt in Alexandria on Tuesday, as anything apart from the three points will mean elimination from the 2017 AFCON.
However, the Super Eagles have pulled off seemingly impossible results in the past and Completesportsnigeria.com's JAMES AGBEREBI relives SIX of those results…
CONGO 0-2 NIGERIA (2014, AFCON Qualifier)
The Super Eagles went to Pointe Noire, Congo, condemned to secure all three points to stand a chance of making it to Equatorial Guinea 2015.
In their earlier meeting in Calabar, Congo defeated Nigeria 3-2, and the Eagles were had to reverse the result in the fortress of Pointe Noire to keep their AFCON dreams alive..
At the end of 90 minutes, goals from Ike Uche (penalty) and Aaron Samuel saw the Eagles triumph 2-0.
Unfortunately, the Eagles failed to make it to Equatorial Guinea 2015 after they were held to a 2-2 draw by South Africa
KENYA 0-1 NIGERIA (2013, World Cup Qualifier)
After a win and a draw against Namibia and Malawi respectively, the Super Eagles were expected to beat Kenya in Calabar, in group F of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Surprisingly, the Eagles needed a last minute goal from Nnamdi Oduamadi to end the game 1-1.
But in the return leg in Nairobi, the Eagles secured a hard-fought 1-0 win thanks to a goal by Ahmed Musa.
The win against Kenya, which was eventually the only away win the Eagles got in the group, brightened their chances of progressing into the final round of the qualifiers.
KENYA 2-3 NIGERIA (2009, World Cup Qualifier)
Going into the final group game in the race for the ticket for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the Eagles had earlier drawn two of their away games (goalless draws against Mozambique and Tunisia).
And to stand any chance of qualifying for the World Cup, they had to beat Kenya in Nairobi and hope Tunisia did not beat Mozambique.
After a tense match, the Eagles won 3-2, with goals from Obafemi Martins (brace) and Yakubu Aiyegbeni.
The win secured qualification to the World Cup that was to be hosted for the very first time on African soil.
ALGERIA 2-5 NIGERIA (2005, World Cup Qualifier)
The Super Eagles took on Angola in a must win game in Kano. Unfortunately, they could only manage a 1-1 draw.
The result placed the Eagles in a situation where they must achieve what had never happened before, that is, beat Algeria right there in their backyard.
But with determination and belief, the Super Eagles achieved it by winning 5-2. Obafemi Martins (brace) Yusuf Ayila, John Utaka and Christian Obodo were all on target for the Eagles.
However, despite Nigeria smashing Zimbabwe 5-1 in their final group game, Angola eventually picked the sole ticket following their 1-0 away win against Rwanda.
SUDAN 0-4 NIGERIA (2001, World Cup Qualifier)
It was a rough ride for the Super Eagles during qualifiers for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Grouped alongside Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Sudan, the only real opposition the Eagles were expected to face was Ghana.
But two defeats and a draw away to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ghana respectively, left their chances of qualifying for the World Cup hanging in the balance.
In order to get their faltering campaign back on track, the Eagles had to beat Sudan in Omdurman and hope Ghana do them a favour against Liberia in Monrovia.
The Eagles thrashed Sudan 4-0 with goals from Austin Okocha, Julius Aghahowa and Yakubu Aiyegbeni (brace).
Qualification for the 2002 World Cup was sealed after the Eagles beat Ghana 3-0 in Port Harcourt.
BURKINA FASO 1-2 NIGERIA (1997, World Cup Qualifier)
Guinea were ahead of the Eagles during the qualifiers for the 1998 World Cup.
Victories against Kenya and Burkina Faso placed the Syli Nationale two points ahead of the Eagles.
All that changed when the Super Eagles beat Guinea them 2-1 in Lagos, to go top of the group.
To put daylight between them and Guinea, the Eagles had to beat Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou and hope Kenya beat Guinea in Nairobi.
A goal from Emmanuel Amuneke and an own goal by Burkina Faso gave the Eagles a 2-1 win.
And to guarantee qualification for the 1998 World Cup, the Eagles defeated Kenya 3-0 thanks to goals from Sunday Oliseh, Emmanuel Amuneke and Wilson Oruma.Jiji.ng the cheapest online shopping in Nigeria.
