By Kayode Ogundare:
KRC Genk of Belgium’s Nigerian international, Wilfred Ndidi, will welcome a move to the English Premier League, but has denied knowledge of transfer speculations linking him with a big-money move to Tottenham Hotspur, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
The Super Eagles midfielder earned rave reviews for Genk in a Belgian First Division league encounter 2-0 win against Eupen on Saturday evening but took time off afterwards to speak on the transfer rumour.
A report in the unofficial Tottenham fans blog had speculated that Tottenham is leading a posse of teams in the pursuit of the signature of the 19-year old midfielder who can also play in defence.
The report read: “There were plenty of reports in the summer that we were tracking and indeed might try to sign Nigerian youngster Wilfred Ndidi.
“The right-footed Genk 19-year-old (20 in December) is a defensive midfielder first and foremost and a central defender or right-back as a secondary option. He has been capped 6 times by Nigeria and is also being watched by Chelsea, West Ham United, Watford, Middlesbrough, Newcastle United and WBA.
“German side Hamburg have made a £10-million bid so the £8-million it is suggested Newcastle United are going to bid in January has little chance of success. It is reported that Genk would accept a January deal where he is leant back to them for the remainder of the season.”
However in an exclusive chat with Completesportsnigeria.com, Ndidi claimed he’s not aware of an approach by any suitor to his club.
“Any serious offer will have to be made to my club which will duly inform me. As I speak to you now, I read the stories in the media just like any other person, but there has not been any concrete offer made to Genk. So I don’t want to worry myself thinking about something that may eventually not materialize,” Ndidi told Completesportsnigeria.com.
Ndidi’s current contract ties him to the Blue Whites until 2020 but he’s hopeful of an amicable resolution if the right deal comes.
He added: “If the right deal comes, Genk will be willing to open talks, but for now, I’m happy at the progress I’m making in my game and helping the club to achieve its set goals.”
Ndidi has been a revelation for Genk since breaking into the team in January 2015. Last season he played 38 times and scored four goals including the effort against Club Brugge on April 20, 2016 which was voted goal of the season in Belgium.
This season he’s played 19 games for the club, scoring twice and is also involved in Nigeria’s quest to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
