England's Teams In The CL

With the smoke barely clear following the Champions League group stages, the draw for the second round takes place on Friday, with four English teams remaining and fancying their chances of progress past the next round. Who will Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal hoping to face for a comfortable path through to the final eight? Who will they be hoping to avoid? Goal.com UK takes a closer look to find out.

Remember that teams that won their group are seeded for the next stage. It is a free draw with only two restrictions: clubs cannot face their group stage opponents; and clubs cannot be drawn against teams from the same country. Thus we list which teams any given club is eligible to face.

Tottenham

Can face: Roma, AC Milan, Lyon, Copenhagen, Valencia, Marseille

Having already gone further than many would have expected, Tottenham are seeded for the second round after topping Group A ahead of reigning champions Inter and could now face their city rivals AC Milan, or other Italian side Roma.

Spurs are full of confidence following their all-action displays in the Champions League, with plenty of players saying they believe they can pull off a result against anyone in the competition.

Dream tie: Having seen Marseille beat Chelsea and Valencia turn in some decent performances against Manchester United, Spurs might fancy Danish side Copenhagen.

Nightmare: Valencia have been in similar free-scoring form to Spurs thus far, scoring 15 goals in Group C, but conceding just four.

Manchester United

Can face: Inter, Roma, AC Milan, Lyon, Marseille, Copenhagen

It was a case of plain sailing for Manchester United in Group C, finishing top of the table with an unbeaten record without ever really having to hit second gear.

It might not have been the most entertaining ride for United fans as they scored just seven goals, but Sir Alex Ferguson's side came close to being the first team not to concede a goal in the group stages, being stopped only in the final game by a 1-1 draw with Valencia, which makes for impressive reading.

Dream tie: United of course have generally fond memories of facing Roma, having dispatched them 7-1 at Old Trafford in 2007, overturning a first leg deficit.

Nightmare: Rafa Benitez is not having the best time at Inter, but the Spaniard may fancy himself able to unlock United having got the better of them on a couple of occasions while at Liverpool.

Chelsea

Can face: Inter, AC Milan, Roma, Lyon, Valencia, Copenhagen

Like Manchester United and Tottenham, Chelsea had wrapped up their progression to the knockout rounds before the final game, topping Group F, three points clear of Marseille, who they lost to in their final game.

Carlo Ancelotti's side has hit a run of bad form as late and will be hoping to have got their season back on track by the time the second round takes place, as the Italian is facing a potential return to his native land.

Dream tie: Ancelotti would surely relish the chance to knock Inter out of the competition, as a nod to former club AC Milan.

Nightmare: Similarly, a tie with AC Milan would surely bring with it plenty of added difficulty, both on and off the pitch.

Arsenal

Can face: Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Schalke

The only English team not to have finished top of their group, Arsenal looked certain to qualify for the latter stages after a flying start, until defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk and Braga left them needing to beat Partizan Belgrade.

The Gunners ran out 3-1 winners at the Emirates Stadium, finishing second in Group H and facing a tie against one of European football's giants.

Dream tie: German side Schalke are probably the most attractive prospect to Arsene Wenger in what is sure to be a tough draw.

Nightmare: Lets face it, nobody wants to face Barcelona, but after their dressing down at the Camp Nou, the Gunners may be hoping to avoid a return to Spain.
