Kanu, Utaka, Nsofor, Anichebe, Odejayi Fire Blanks In FA Cup Games; Olofinjana, Mikel,
Aiyegbeni Not Listed By Clubs Kalu Uche, Taiwo, Ofere In Action In Spain, France & Italy
Dickson Etuhu (Fulham): Super Eagles defensive midfielder, Dickson Etuhu played for 90 minutes in Fulham’s 6-2 thumping of Peterbrough United in the 3rd Round of the English FA Cup on Saturday at Craven Cottage and capped his performance with a 45th minute goal.
Etuhu received the ball cleared onto his path from winger Damien Duff and blasted home the second goal for the Cottagers although the ball took a deflection on its way to Peterborough net. It was Etuhu’s 8th Cup game for Fulham since he joined them in 2008/2009 season. In his fist season at the club, Etuhu played four FA Cup games and the following season, made three appearances in the FA Cup. Saturday’s game made it Etuhu’s 24th appearance in all competitions this season while the goal is his second in the current season as well.
Senegalese striker, Diomansy Kamara scored his first hat-trick in English Football in the game while Zoltan Gera and Jonathan Greening completed the rout for Mark Hughe’s side.
Danny Shittu (Millwall): Manager Kenny Jackett welcomed back Super Eagles centre back, Danny Shittu to his starting line-up on Saturday as Millwall fell 1-4 to visiting English Premier League side, Birmingham City at the New Den. Shittu who had been out of Millwall’s games for sometime due to harmstring injury was making his 10th appearance in all competitions this season for his team.
He was close to putting his name on the score sheet in the 10th minute but his header was directed straight at goalkeeper, Maik Taylor.
The big Nigerian was however replaced in the 73rd minute by Dareen Ward. Matt Derbyshire opened the scoring for City in the 17th minute when he fired home a shot approximately from 18 yards and scored his second of the day in the 45th minute but Danny Murphy (27) and Cameron Jerome (72) were also on the score card. Danny Schofield scored Millwall’s consolatory goal in the 90th minute, albeit Steve Morison missed a 53rd minute penalty for the Npower Championship oufit.
Nwankwo Kanu, John Utaka (Portsmouth): Former Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu played his 19th FA Cup game since he began his career in England on Saturday at the Withdean Stadium when Portsmouth lost 3-1 to Brighton. Kanu has thus played 19 matches in all competitions this season; 17 Npower Championship matches and one Carling Cup game for Pompey against Leicester City on 21 September, 2010. In his 19 FA Cup games, Papilo has scored just seven goals but most memorable ones were his semi final and final goals the 2007/08 season in against West Brom and Cardiff as Portsmouth under manager Harry Redknapp won the competition.
Kanu made three appearances in the 2001/02 season in the FA Cup for Arsenal and one each in the 2002/03 and 2003/04 seasons also for the Gunners. In the 2004/05 season, Kanu played twice in the FA Cup and made one appearance in the 2005/06 season for West Brom. With West Bromwich Albion’s relegation, the then Super Eagles captain moved to Portsmouth and played two FA Cup games in the 2006/07 season in which he scored two goals, feats he achieved as a substitute from the bench.
Wily manager, Harry Redknapp gave Kanu more games under his belt the following season this time around five, scoring twice again and helping his team win the FA Cup in the 2007/2008 season after they last won it in 1939, with three attempts in the final.
Forgotten Super Eagles striker, John Utaka who was a subject of transfer speculation linking him to Turkish side, Konyaspor was on the pitch from start to finish of the better forgotten game which incidentally was played on his birthday.
The number 8 seems to have a special place in the life of the skillful Nigerian who has played same number of FA Cup games for Pompey.
But the 2007/08 season will be Utaka’s best moment as his cross in the final against Cardiff City was converted by Nwankwo Kanu in a 1-0 win Victor Obinna Nsofor (West Ham United): Super Eagles forward, Victor Obinna Nsofor played for 76 minutes in West Ham United’s 2-0 home win over Barnsley on Saturday. He was replaced by Scott Parker.
The former junior international walked straight into the dressing room dejectly after being substituted.
It was a commendable outing for the Hammers and Nsofor played a big role in the victory with his runs and shots at goal, his 12th and 44th minutes efforts being the high point of his attempts at scoring. Jonathan Spector (29th) and Frederick Piquionne (90+4) scored West Ham Utd’s goals
Yemi Odubade (Stevenage): Unknown Yemi Odubade played his 16th game in all competitions for Stevenage who recorded one of the historic upsets of the FA Cup on Saturday beating Newcastle United without Oluwashola Ameobi 3-1 at the club’s Broad hall Way Stadium.
Odubade, a striker with the jersey number 11 for The Boro has played six FA Cup games for present team and four for East Bourne Borough in the 2005/06 season. He didn’t play a single game in the 2004/05 season. The 23 year-old, born on July 4, 1987 replaced Peter Winn in the 90th minute.
Dele Adebola (Notthingham Forest): Ibadan-born Dele Adebola played for 22 minutes in Notthingham Forest’s 2-1 away win over Preston North End on Saturday at the Deepdale Stadium.
Luke Chambers struck an 89th minute winner to send Forest into the FA Cup fourth round making Phil Brown’s reign in charge of Preston start on a disappointing note. Paul Anderson was on target in the 50th minute while Darren Carter grabbed the homers’ solitary goal in the 35th minute. Adebola replaced David Mc Goldrick in the 68th minute.
It was Adebola’s 12th FA Cup game since his career began in England.
He played four times for Crystal Palace in the 2002/03 season, twice in the 2003/04 season for Coventry City. He didn’t play a game the following season but played thrice in he 2005/06 season.
Adebola played once in the 2006/07 season, twice in the 2007/08 season, none in the following season and had one game to his credit last season. All together, he has just two goals to show for his record in the world’s oldest football competition.
Victor Anichebe (Everton): Former Nigerian U-23 international and Super Eagles striker, Victor Anichebe replaced Louis Saha in the 63rd minute as Everton hammered Scunthorpe United 4-1 away at the Glanford Park on Saturday. The game marked Anichebe’s 5th English FA Cup game for the Toffees since he became a regular feature in the 2005/06 saeson (though he hasn’t scored).
Louis Saha, Jeromaine Beckford, Seamus Coleman, Maroune Fellani and Leighton Baines were on the scoresheet for David Moyes’ side while Michael Collins 46th minute goal proved to be only a consolation for Scunthorpe United.
It was also Anichebe’s 5th appearance in all competitions this season for Everton, having played just fur times in the EPL this season.
Kayode Odejayi (Colchester United): One-time Super Eagles invitee, Kayode Odejayi was in action on Saturday for Colchester United who were knocked out of the FA Cup afer a 4-0 bashing in the hands of Swansea Town.
Ibadan - born Odejayi was introduced in the 55th minute in place of Ian Henderson in what was his 16th FA Cup game since the 2005/06 season. He has scored four goals in the competition since then but it was his 22nd game in all competitions this season having played 21 times in the Championship this term.
Tom Taiwo (Carlisle Town): Carlisle Town paraded Nigerian-born Tom Taiwo for 81 minutes in a 1-0 away loss to Torquay United on Saturday.
Taiwo had an impressive game before the tactical switch which saw Craig Curran rising from the substitutes bench to replace him.
However, Taiwo was yellow-carded in the 37th minute.
Yakubu Aiyegbeni (Everton): Super Eagles striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni was left on the bench for all 90 minutes in Everton’s 5-1 win over home side, Scunthorpe United in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
If manager David Moyes had played Aiyegbeni, who is a transfer target for West Ham United, it would have been a record 22nd FA Cup game for him in all the clubs he has played for in England since the 2003/04 season.
A breakdown of Aiyegbeni’s record in the FA Cup shows that he played four times in the 2003/04 season with a goal to his credit for Portsmouth.
The following season (2004/05), he played two matches less but scored two goals.
Aiyegbeni moved from Portsmouth to Middlesbrough in the 2005/06 season, played seven matches and banged in four goals to the bargain.
The power playing striker had a successful campaign in the following season (2006/07) in which he scored four goals from eight FA Cup games.
He made one substitute appearance in Everton’s skyblue colours in the 2007/08 season but was not involved in any FA Cup action for the Toffees the next season likewise the 2009/10 season.
Osaze Odemwingie (West Brom): West Bromwich Albion gaffer, Roberto Di Matteo who scored twice in FA Cup wins at Wembly Stadium during his days with Chelsea as a player saw his hope of making an impact in the current season evaporate as Npower Championship giants, Reading defeated them 1-0 at the Madjeski Stadium on Saturday.
Striker Shane Long fired his team to victory path in the 41st minute, his seventh goal in six games with a cool finish to send the Baggies out of the competition.
It would have been Odemwingie’s first FA Cup game in a season he has done pretty well.
Nedum Onuoha (Sunderland): Super Eagles prospect, Nedum Onuoha was not listed in Sunderland’s 1-2 home loss to Notts County at the Stadium of Light, making it impossible for him to impress for the club whom he is likely to move to parmanently from Manchester City where he came on loan.
Seyi Olofinjana (Cardiff City): Combative Super Eagles defensive midfielder, Seyi George Olofinjana was not listed in Cardiff City’s 1-1 away draw at the Britannia Stadium against Stoke City on Saturday.
Edward Ofere (Lecce): Former Malmo FF striker, Edward Ofere fired blanks in his 11th game for Lecce and was replaced in the 37th minute as they defeated Lazio 2-1 at the Olimpico Stadium on Sunday.
The former Enugu Rangers hitman has so far scored three goals in the on-going Serie A this term.
Angelo Obinze (Torino): Player In Super Eagles invitee and Torino skipper Obinze played the entire duration of his sides 1-1 draw away to Padova at the Euganes stachim on Saturday.
It was 19th his start of the season for Torino i the Serie B in the on-going saeson. He is yet to score a goal nor provide an assist from his defensive position this term.
Obiorah Nwankwo, Joel Chukwuma Obi (Inter Milan): Inter Milan’s Nigerian duo of Obiorah Nwankwo and Joel Chukwuma Obi were not listed for action in Inter’s 1-1 away draw to Catania at the Angelo Massimino Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The last time Obiorah Nwankwo played for the Nerazzurri was in the FIFA World Cup competition against TP Mazembe which they won 3-0. He is yet to be listed for Inter since Brazillian bore coach, Leonardo took charge of Massimo Moratti’s men, while Joel Obi last featured for the Nerazzurri in the Milan derby which they lost. He has so far played five games for the current Italian and European Champions.
Michael Odibe (AC Siena): Super Eagles invitee, Michael Odibe was again not paraded for his side AC Siena as they thumped Albinoleffe 2-1 at the Tranchi Mountepaschi arena on Saturday.
Odibe is yet to feature for Siena the season but has made the substitute bench five times and a has been rumoured to be on his way out of the club on loan.
Christian Obodo (Torino): Super Eagles midfielder Christian Obodo was an unused substitute in the encounter and it would have been his 13th appearance for the club if he had played any part in the game. He has scored only one goal so far for Torino.
Odion Jude Ighalo (Cesena): Former Flying Eagles captain, Odion Jude Ighalo was not listed for Cesena as they played out a goalless draw at home to Genoa at the Dino Manuzzi Stadium Sunday evening.
It would have been his third game if he had featured in the encounter.
Nnamdi Oduamadi (AC Milan): Former Flying Eagles star, Nnamdi Oduamadi was an unused substitute in AC Milan’s 4-4 home draw against Udinese at the San Siro on Sunday evening.
It would have been his second appearance if ‘Robinho’ had played any part in the encounter. He is currently on the radar of horde of clubs in Italy with Genoa leading the pack to sign the highly promising Nigerian starlet.
Haruna Lukman (AS Monaco): Super Eagles midfielder, Haruna was on the entire duration for Moscow as his side were dumped out of the coupe De France Cup by a low League side Chambery at the Municipal stadium on Saturday.
Brown Ideye (Sochaux): Super Eagles one-cap player Brown Ideye scored his side’s only goal in the 81st minute against Jarvilla at the Mariel Picot Stadium to earn them a place in the next round of the Coupe De France Cup on Saturday Evening. It was Ideye’s first goal in the Coupe De France this season Ligue 1 saeson so far.
Kalu Uche (Almeria): Super Eagles attacking midfielder Uche played all 90 minutes in his 12th appearance for Almeria in their 4-1 drubbing in the hands of Mallorca at the Iberoster stadium on Sunday evening.
The former Wisla Krakow player has so far scored four goals in the La Liga this season and has been yellow carded once this term.
