...AS EAGLES STAR SHOCKS MARTINS AT HOME

Peter Odemwingie won the battle of two Eagles as West Bromwich Albion shocked Carling Cup winners, Birmigham City 3-1 at Saint Andrews on Saturday.
Albion’s star man, Odemwingie alongside his Birmingham opponent, Obafemi Martins were expected to play key roles for their respective teams in this fixture as both sides fight to escape the drop.

Martins who is on loan from Rubin Kazan, made the headlines prior to the encounter, having scored the winning goal for the Blues in the 2-1 win against Arsenal at the prestigious Wembley Stadium.
That goal helped secure Alex Mcleish’s side secure their first trophy in 48 years and Martins has since been identified as a key man for the modest side with many fans already according him legendary status.

But it was Odemwingie who had the last laugh on this occasion, as  goals from Youssouf Mulumbu, James Morrison and Paul Scharner enabled the Baggies to leap frog their local rivals in the battle for Premiership survival.

Odemwingie also outshone Martins in the encounter as he completely turned around the game after coming on for Marc Antoine Fortune at half time.
He made an instant impact setting up the opening goal for Mulumbu in the 47th minute. The substitute pass was perfectly timed for Mulumbu to flick the ball wide of Foster and into the net.

Birmingham responded immediately and equalized within a minute through Beausejour who nipped in between two defenders to steer home a cross from Lee Bowyer.
A superb strike from Morrison restored Albion’s lead in the 58th minute with Odemwingie missing a great chance to double the visitors’ advantage after 67 minutes.
Chris Brunt’s shot hit the post and fell to Odemwingie, unmarked 10 yards out-but he fired over the bar.
Odemwingie also missed another glorious chance to make the score 4-1 for the Baggies following Sharner’s third goal in the 72nd minute but he headed Brunt’s cross back.
