Road To 2012 For Super Eagles
Posted: Oct 13, 2011
I AM WRITING this on the morning of Tuesday, October 11, 2011. It is three days after Nigeria’s Super Eagles were sensationally eliminated by Guinea’s Syli Nationale from the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations race and the whole country is still seething with anger, disappointment, shock and disbelief.
For the first time in 25 years, the “Giant of Africa” has failed to qualify for the biggest event in African football. And the man with the dubious record of achievement is the “Coach of the People” Samson Yebowei Siasia.
I should be the most upset Nigerian alive today about the turn of events because virtually everything I “revealed” about Guinea’s game plan in this column last week came to pass. There’s nothing as frustrating as seeing something bad unfold before your very eyes, knowing full well that you saw it coming and it could have been prevented and/or avoided. But because you are not in a position to act, you also become a victim. That can be very frustrating and that is how I feel about the Eagles elimination.
But this is not about me, personally. It is about Nigeria and the millions of soccer fans left completely devastated by the Eagles’ inexusable, unacceptable performance. It is about finding out exactly why what happened on Saturday happened, and how we must ensure that such a national disaster does not happen to us ever again. I have a few, preliminary suggestions on the immediate causes and the solutions, based on my knowledge of the workings of the Super Eagles. Here we go...
Siasia’s Major Blunder
lSamson Siasia is already on the floor, so I don’t need to kick him any more. But I have to say, with all modesty, that if he had taken my warnings a bit more seriously, we would not have been in this mess.
I raised the alarm about Guinea’s threat because I could read from all of Siasia’s pre-match interviews that he wasn’t contemplating a serious challenge from the opponents at all. He was so confident in his talks (over-confident, I would say) that I felt the need to publicly bring him back to his senses. Pride, they say, comes before a big fall.
A confident coach inspires and motivates his players with confidence; but an over-confident coach unwittingly destroys his team by transmitting a false sense of invincibility to the players.
An over-confident coach invariably infects his players with over-confidence and that, in my opinion, was what led to all those missed chances by the Eagles in the first half. The team did not show the passion and the hunger required for the game of such importance because they already felt they would win anyway. By the time they realized their folly, it was too late to make amends.
Unfortunately, this is the second time that Siasia will fall into this psychological trap of taking things for granted.
At the 2009 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Egypt where he was drafted in at the last moment, I remember Chief Segun Odegbami warning Siasia about how unpredictable football can be; how the game can embarrass and humble you when you least expect. Siasia was not ready at all for the surprise that football threw at him again last Saturday.
Like in 2009, he took victory for granted and got the shock of his life. He later apologized to Nigerians and he was forgiven. He has apologized again for his latest blunder in 2011. It remains to be seen whether the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will give him yet another chance.
Beyond over-confidence, another factor that “killed” Siasia last Saturday was poor selection and substitution and this has been well documented by observers. Ordinarily, no questions would have been asked about this had the players he put on the pitch done the business creditably. But since they failed, the coach’s choices are bound to be re-examined.
The most shocking was Siasia’s decision to leave Ikechukwu Uche on the bench in a match the Super Eagles needed goals to have a good head-start. I thought we could take it for granted that Uche was Nigeria’s most prolific goal-scorer at the moment and that he would automatically start against Guinea.
I’m still curious to find out why that was not the case as Siasia dropped him in preference for Emmanuel Emenike. Had Uche started the match, the safe bet is that he would have slotted home a couple of the chances that went begging in the first half and changed the whole course of the match. Siasia made several other curious selection and subtitution decisions. It was truly a bad day at the office for Sia One.
What NFF Should Do
REGULAR readers of this column know that I am an advocate of CONTINUITY in the management of the Super Eagles. I have written several articles where I analyzed how frequent changes in technical personnel have retarded the national team since 2002.
I supported the retention of Berti Vogts after we were eliminated in the quarter-finals at Ghana 2008 Nations Cup. I also supported Shaibu Amodu (despite my disagreements with his methods) following our third-place finish at Angola 2010. On both occasions, the coaches were eventually fired as public anger rose to unprecedented levels. If Vogts and Amodu couldn’t survive their own circumstances, I wonder how Siasia, who couldn’t even qualify for the 2012 finals, will survive to keep his job.
However, there are hints that the NFF technical committee is torn between recommending Siasia’s outright sack or retaining him while “curbing” his powers to select and discipline the team without interference. Indeed, several executive committee members have been talking about how they gave Siasia so much “free hand” only for him to crash the team.
My take on the matter is that the NFF must make up its mind either to sack Siasia now, or keep him with his powers intact. A situation where you retain a coach who would not have a final say in team affairs is a perfect recipe for a worse disaster. The only reason it has been easy to hold Siasia responsible for our Nations Cup elimination is because he called the shots in full.
Imagine a future scenario where the technical committee gets fully involved in team selection and discipline, who will determine team strategy and formation? Wouldn’t the coach lose respect amongst his players who will see him as a lame duck? And when results go wrong like they will surely do, will the committee members be sacked along with the coach? Come on, gentlemen of the NFF, please forget this fanciful idea which will only create more confrontation and confusion in the Super Eagles. Whoever is the coach of the national team must have the final say in all technical and disciplinary matters. That is the standard all over the world and you know it.
So, please make up your minds fast, Aminu Maigari and company. You either sack Siasia now for failing to win the Nations Cup ticket; or you give him a second chance with his full powers intact. That is my position.
Time Is Of Essence
DESPITE the disappointment of our Nations Cup exit, I have picked on a forward-looking title for my column today because that is exactly what we need to do: look forward and start working now.
On Monday, Complete Sports reported that just about the time the 2012 Nations Cup finals will be under way in Gabon and Equitorial Guinea in January 2012 without Nigeria, the first round knock-out series for the 2013 Nations Cup qualifiers will also commence, to be followed soon after by the kick-off of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, both featuring Nigeria. Therefore, we really do not have any time to waste mourning our recent loss. Instead, we should use the lesson to prepare better for the tasks ahead.
We have witnessed many times in sport how countries and individuals turned adversity into prosperity and nothing stops the Super Eagles from doing the same. One example is France who failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup finals in USA after conceding a last minute goal to Bulgaria in a final qualifier played in Paris on 17 November, 1993. France needed only a draw to qualify; they scored first in the first half and seemed to be coasting home only to concede two second half goals, the second coming two seconds to the final whistle! The whole French nation was devastated and I still remember Michel Platini standing totally stunned at the final whistle.
But exactly four years later, France had rebuilt their confidence and their team so well that they became world champions for the first time in their history. With the right attitude and the right approach from the NFF and all concerned, Nigeria may yet turn our current adversity into prosperity as well.
Osaze’s Arrogance
I DON’T believe there’s any truth to speculations expressed in some quarters that Osaze Odemwingie sabotaged Siasia against Guinea by deliberately missing goal-scoring chances especially in the first half. But if that would remove any doubts from the minds of conspiracy theorists, I suggest the NFF should investigate the allegation so that the West Brom player can have an opportunity to clear his name for posterity.
Osaze loves the personal glory and I am fully sure that he wanted to score against Guinea. His misses were due mainly to his lack of form which can happen to any striker.
If I can forgive Osaze’s misses, same cannot be said of his post-match comments on Twitter where he reportedly disparaged Nigerian sports journalists amongst others. Osaze was quoted as saying that journalists are enemies of the national team because journalists beg players for money and criticise the players only when their monetary demands are not met. This is a very weighty allegation indeed.
As a self-respecting journalist, I am embarrassed by Osaze’s allegation and I hereby challenge him to name the journalists that he is referring to. If he cannot, I suggest that the Sports Writers’ Association of Nigeria (SWAN) should take up the matter with him and obtain a retraction and apology
I am a member of the AIT Football Awards panel that nominated Osaze for the 2009 Nigerian Footballer of the Year award. The majority of the panelists are also journalists. Osaze should tell Nigerians how much he paid us to get the nomination.
The Osaze I know used to be a modest, cool-headed young man. But he seems to have lost his way since scoring 15 goals in his English Premier League debut season. That momentary success has entered his head, but it’s not too late for him to retrace his steps.
Until I observe that he has purged himself of his stupid arrogance and insolence, I will not mention Osaze’s name in my column again. I just can’t stand people who are too full of themselves. If he can’t apologise for his terrible misses against Guinea, the least he can do is to shut up his mouth and let’s have some peace and quiet.
I hope his media advisers will pass on this message.
*This column was written BEFORE the international friendly game between Nigeria and Ghana in London on Tuesday night.
Feedback
The response to last week’s article, “Guinea Exposed!” followed by reactions to the Eagles’ elimination has been overwhelming. Here are just a few selected messages...
PLEASE give me the GSM numbers of Barrister Chris Green, Alhaji Aminu Maigari and Samson Siasia so that I can tell them a piece of my mind. – Most Special Apostle Dr. Akin Odebo, JP.
NFF should not take a hasty decision on Siasia’s fate. Yes, he failed Nigeria in the Nations Cup but if we allow him carry through his discipline crusade greater things await us in future. – Lanre Oredein, Benin City.
LET the disciplinarian go! He doesn’t listen to advice. –0805589****
DEAR MUMINI. You did your part by exposing Guinea’s game plan to our coaches and players before the match but they ignored your expo. Keep up the good work. – Adebisi Ibiyeye, Lagos.
SIASIA is a failure and he should be sacked immediately. Now we know that he won under-age tournament silver medals with over-age players. – Felix, Palm Avenue, Lagos.
HOW COULD Siasia leave his best players on the bench in such a crucial game?
And what is his reason for pulling out Joel Obi from midfield? Let us stop deceiving ourselves, Siasia is not competent to handle the Super Eagles. – Olaitan, Lagos.
CHRISTIAN Chukwu, Amodu Shaibu and Austin Eguavoen were axed at different times despite winning bronze medals at the AFCON. Now, Siasia couldn’t even qualify. The age group football coach has let us down. – Pastor Segun Adebayo, Alagbado, Lagos.
SIASIA’s apology my foot. Why should Nigerians accept his apology when he couldn’t accept Vincent Enyeama’s apology? He should go, please. – Chukwuma, Okota, Lagos.
SIASIA’s silver winning streak continues with second place behind Guinea.
Perhaps we’ll still come second in the World Cup qualifiers with him in charge. – Austin Azi, Jos.
IT IS so sad that in spite of the expo on Guinea’s strategy, Siasia and his bunch of lazy players still broke our hearts. – Rev. K. Bajomo.
SIASIA’s credibility and competence as a coach have been irretrievably damaged in my estimation and that of other fans. – Akus Esq, Abuja.
MUMINI, you told Super Eagles to beware, to concentrate for 90 minutes plus, not to over celebrate until qualification was certain but they didn’t heed any of the warnings. I don’t think Siasia read your article. – Awoola Egbe, Lagos.
SIASIA shot himself in the foot. 0808448****
NIGERIA versus Guinea has shown that Siasia is not tactically sound at all. He is just an average coach. – Jatto Love, Ekpoma, Edo State.
DEAR Mr. Alao. We lost but we must not be bad losers. Before now, we complained that Nigerian coaches cannot discipline the Super Eagles. Now that Siasia is putting his foot down, we are crying about high-handedness. If we allow him to finish building his team, we will be the better for it. – Dele, Sagamu, Ogun State.
SIASIA now holds the record as the first coach not to qualify Nigeria for AFCON for 25 years. He must face the music. – Engr. Odudu, Ajegunle, Lagos.
SIASIA must be regretting not taking your warning seriously. We are disappointed. – Amos O.I, WRPC, Warri, Delta State.
IF SIASIA fails to resign, he should be sacked immediately. – John Bardi, Benin City.
DEAR Mumini. The Guineans adopted every strategy you predicted. Meaning that if our coaches had paid attention, the result would have been different. Now that Siasia has failed, I hope you will criticize him like Shaibu Amodu. – Moses, Aba, Abia State.
We have a whole year to the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. We shouldn’t be disillusioned. We should be better prepared next time around, please. – 0803829****
SIASIA should be marched to the nearest guard-room. Shikena! – Segun.
IF you can’t qualify us for a 16-team AFCON, how will you fare in a World Cup race for just five African slots. Go, Siasia, go! – Iteogu Godwin.
MR. ALAO. Can you please tell me now why I should watch any Nigerian clubside or national team on TV again, not to talk of going to the stadium. Nonsense! – Falola Seun, Oshodi-Lagos.
SIASIA messed up. Had we known, we should have left Shaibu Amodu, the man with the magic wand, in charge. – Engr Wole Ibikunle, Ibadan.
SIASIA killed himself with his poor selection, but I’m sure he has now learned his lessons. Let him continue. He will correct his mistakes next time. – Olayinka Fakeye.
NIGERIANS should now apologise to Shaibu Amodu for the injustice done to him. – 0806407****
BEIGN a disciplined coach, Siasia should be bold enough to resign now. – Dada J. Olatunji, Ota, Ogun State.
I SUSPECT sabotage. The guy that was recently recalled to the Eagles. Is that how he back-passes to opposing goalkeepers in the EPL? My people, I smell a rat! Pay-back time for Sia One for daring to suspend the big boy? – Sleepless Man (0815106****).

I have never support Siasia as SE coach from day one, when he was a coach in Oceans Boys he failed, when he coach Hearthland Fc, he also failed, he coach under 21 in Egypt 2009, he failed. A good coach will never do what he did against Guinea, There is nothing he can offer Nigeria. Someone that can not qualify us for slot of 16 teams then how can he qualify us for slot of 5 in world cup qualifier. let him go, he is a failure

Oga Mumuni,
You spoke with 2 tongues. There are issues bigger than Siasia worrying our nation and you failed to mention them.
To take what you said a bit futher, I will say that a new coach in Nigeria would fail, just like Siasia except he has enough time to work.
Beyond yourself, can you come out and truly say that NO sports journalists does what Osaze alleged. Asking him to come out and mentioned names tells me you are just being sentimental. What you should do is make a clarion call to your colleagues and ask them to take heed. You have called Osaze a liar with your position which I think is short-sighted. This is Nigeria and we know there are corruption anywhere. Wake up sir! There cannot be smoke without fire!
During the days of Westehof, Bonfere, Amodu and Chukwu; we had players that are the toasts of the world even though it diminished as the years pass by. When last did Nigeria win the African footballer or even BBC footballer of the year or how many can you now count on the top 10 of these awards. There was a time you can have up to 5 Nigerian players. It should tell us that we no longer have truly talented footballers. They are easily comparable to the half-baked graduates we have in our labour market. They have little to offer but demand for your eyes as salaries. That is why you see them playing in Cyprus, Bosnia, China, etc. There was a glorious time when you see Nigerians in the top team in Spain, Holland, France, Italy, Germany. Common! The press have wrongly encouraged Nigerians to live in fools paradise, setting wrong expectations based on fading past glories. Our teams are no longer good. When we have a team that do not deserve to go past group stages, we demand that they go and win the cup. If they "fumbled and wobbled" into the second round and they lose, we bay for their blood with the PRESS leading the battle charge! A systematic decline had been obvious for the past 15 years.
It is our overconfidence and superiority complex that deceive us and blind us from the truth. We think we can go down and others will continue to stay under us.
Our PRESS and FANS covers foreign league more than they even do the local league. Take a survey and you will see that the majority of those that do it do it out of obligation, not passion. No wonder players don't stay here to play. They jump on any available train to Europe or Asia despite the fact that they are yet to learn their trade to a required level. And we think this is the best way to get he new Okochas, Yekini and Finidis.
Like Shakespeare wrote, we need a Daniel to come to judgement and truly save this nation or we will suffer needlessly throughout this new decade. NFF, Press, Fans are only using the coach as a scapegoat to cover their own faults. Yoruba people has an adage that says something like this: God sees those who shoot arrows into the air and hide under a mortar.
Please let us stop this knee-jerk reaction. Nothing that happened came as a surprise or should be. Its been a long time coming.
Sacking Siasia WILL not save Nigeria's football. Sacking our last 5 coaches never did, neither would it do now. I see him to be more or less like the last runner of a relay race that already had a bad beginning, resulting in him getting the baton last. Do we blame the last runner alone for not winning a medal even though he did not finish last.
Finally, Oga Mumuni, it is easier to write tactics on the face of the paper than implementing it. That is what writers are know for anyway. Football is not always like mathematics formulae. If you run the play and your player fails to score, or the goalkeeper has a bad day - what becomes of your plan? Please do not get angry when you come up with advises and they are not accepted - it is only the coach that often get sacked. Everybody makes mistakes and that include you and me. -

@ the watcher
I really respect your views, shows so much intelligence which has been what our football has been lacking, been out of the country for 7yrs and i remembered that even then there were accusations of players paying journalists
What does business does complete sports have in promoting players who play in vietnam with sensational headlines that make you think the player is performing wonders but he is just doing so against mediocre players
like watcher said, how many Nigerians are playing in top clubs in europe, sure they can be counted on just one finger even the 94 team had 3 goal keepers who were number 1 at their respective clubsPeter Rufai
Rufai started his career in his country, playing with Stationery Stores F.C. and Femo Scorpions. In 1986, he moved to Benin, with AS Dragons FC de l'Ouémé, becoming the first player in his position to play abroad.
At a more professional level, Rufai spent six years in Belgium, with K.S.C. Lokeren Oost-Vlaanderen and K.S.K. Beveren, although he appeared sparingly. In 1993–94, he played 12 matches for Dutch neighbours Go Ahead Eagles, which finished 12th.
In 1994, Rufai started a Portuguese adventure with S.C. Farense. In his first year, he was instrumental as the Algarve side only conceded 38 goals in 34 matches, qualifying to the UEFA Cup for the first time ever. His solid performances earned him a transfer to La Liga, but he struggled to start for lowly Hércules CF during his stay, in an eventual relegation.
However, Rufai signed with established Deportivo de La Coruña the ensuing summer, backing up another African, Jacques Songo'o, for two seasons - this included keeping a clean sheet in a January 1998 home success against CD Tenerife (1–0), as the Cameroonian was suspended.[1] He then returned to Portugal for one final year, with modest Gil Vicente FC, also being second-choice.
In 2003, Rufai returned to Spain, settling in the country and opening a goalkeeper's school.[1]
Alloy Agu-was top goal keeper at mvv before moving to liege where he was top goal keeper again while agbonibasket was number 1 at rayo valencano
Can same be said of all the clowns we have in goal now
can you compare the defence line of keshi, gentle giant okechukwu, ben iroha and eguaveon to the broomsticks we have now or is it jayjay and oliseh you want to compare with mikel and joel obi?or osazeand all the croonies all together can not be compared to just yekini not to add mutiu, amunike, amokachi, ikpeba, akpoborie??????
as soon as our players score 2 goals in kazakhstan you will see a sensational headline from papers like complete sports, adeshina obashittu rules Kazakhstan, are those the kind of players we should even think of?
The watcher, can i copy your write up and spread it on another forum?maybe some dull heads will open their eyes -

Honestly Sir, I had to wait to read your column online to really have my say on the issue. I missed the match and I thank God I did, though it deprived me the opportunity to comment on it. I therefore accept your version of it all. But Sir, do not rule out the possibility of journalists accepting cash from players. Osaze only has to name names, he can't just stop at making allegations. As for black listing him, I concur. Let other journalists do so if they are all innocent of his allegations. As for the NFF am afraid if a Nigerian revolution/re awakening starts, it will start from NFF. Sir, Kudos.

@ The Watcher, thanks for your comment. @ Mo, God bless you. Everybody seems to be expert now that the Eagles have failed but non apart from Mumuni saw it coming. All these would not have happened if those players had taken their chances and score the chances that came their way. For me I think Siasia has started well, though we have experienced some hiccup along the way, we should not throw away the baby with the bathwater. We should not forget where we are coming from (2010 w/cup). There has been an improvement in our team play, we are not yet where we want to be, but we can be there, if we allow the coach to continue.Don't disrupt the team by starting afresh.( Don't sack the coach.)

To ask someone for money ,you have to be in good relation with the person, you cannot just walk up to Osaze and ask him for money. So many people are educated but cannot comprehend situations, what is really wrong for a journalist to ask Osaze for money?Mumini does not influence all you guys supporting Osaze to see Osaze in different light, his job is to report about a match we all watched and form our opinion about it, because a reporter wrote about Osaze that he had a bad game , so what you guys are telling me is Osaze had a good game , but because he did not give the reporter money he reported the wrong match story. The moral of this story is that Osaze will have an audience in the WATCHER, MO AND OBATUSKA. HOW FAR CAN A JOURNALIST HELP THE COURSE OF A FOOTBALLER? Siasia or any coach in Nigeria can not say a journalist has influenced their decision in inviting a player to the national team, so how far again can Earnest Okonkwo influence the invitation of Segun Odegbami or Christian Chukwu to the Eagles because he took money from them. The allegation is uncalled for at this time, Osaze had a bad game .PLS OSAZE DON'T ADD MORE TO YOUR PROBLEMS , YOUR ALLEGATION IS MEANINGLESS. We can all see that the same people that believed in this are the same people supporting Siasia, they have no clue about what is going on, Samson siasia is total fraud and he has been exposed, in short he cannot coach. For you MO there is no tool that is good in the hands of a bad worker, all the nonsense that we have no players is a wash, because we played Guinea #74 in the world , Madgascar under 23 team #156 in the world and Ethiopia #124 in the world and we fail to qualify. We even believed with crop of players we have that we are better than #43 in the world , so what is your point?

you want to deny that some players paid journalist to write about them, dosu also made that same allegation, akpoborie also made that allegation
lets call a spade a spade
some,if not all,of these journalist collect money from players, not saying mumuni is involved cos i highly respect him but he should not try and speak for the rest of his collegues for he does not know their intentions
we all know of some certain journalists back in the day who were acting as player agents,we know of NFA planting a player on a coach
we all know of how Etim ESin accused a journalist of asking for money and going ahead to call him a waste of journalistic experience in calabar

pls Siasia does not work with agents, he has his own scouts and they are not agents. Osaze has turned what is a personal issue to a national issue, you have not proven to me how this is affecting anything. Journalist are allowed to write about any player, but it,s left to the coach or fans to decide what they think . We cannot be talking about Osaze everytime, he scored his 15 goals, we gave him 15 minutes that is done. What he has done is divert our attention from his poor performance to non issue. The issue at hand is Siasia and JUST LIKE GHANA HE MUST GO.

@ Mo. I am highly honoured. Please spread the message as you like.
@ Kola, usa. Do you know the problem of journalist asking for money is not limited to just football or any sport for that matter. It extends to every facet of our national existence. Do you know why the PRESS is called The Fourth Estate? Time will not permit to do so but you can goggle it.The honest truth is that there are good journalists out there as there are bad journalists. Mr Mumuni's position is like someone accusing the our police officers of collecting N20 on our road, and the IG denying it and asking the person to name the officers responsible.
The truth is that it takes 2 to tango. Some players pressurize journalists at times pushing them to write something good about them in the paper so that they can play for National teams at different levels as a ticket to a foreign transfer. Some journalists tow the path of honour and some do not. Some players may not be able to name people because they have benefited through the same thing in the past. The system is rotten.
I will not lay all the blame on THE PRESS since that would be unfair. The Government, NFF and Fans should take their fair share. Using one person as scapegoat is simply unwise.
So I say again, our problem is not Siasia, our football has descended into an all-time low and we do not want to face it. Look at our performance in the World Cup and Nations Cup since 1994 and plot their graphs, you will see a steady decline in performance.
So many times in the past 20 years, we have influenced NFF to sack coaches upon coaches. Count them yourself. If the approach is the best, we should have won the World Cup and Nations Cup repeatedly over the past decades. We don't need a soothsayer to tell us that this approach is bad.
Saying the issue at hand is Siasia is totally poor thinking and plain short-sightedness. It would not get us anywhere. We can't keep doing the same thing over and over and expect a different result. NFF shoud sack Siasia if they think it is the best they can do. It simply means we are back to our vicious cycle.
Lastly, NFF needs to work on our local league. Right now, it is simply a pathetic show of shame. Do you know how old our League is? If wine tastes better with age, the same can't be said of our League. When I was in Secondary schools years ago, we used to travel all over the State with our school football team when they compete for the Principal Cups every year. Look around today and tell me if something like that exists.
Today, it only takes an home-based player a single match with the national team and the next thing is that he is somewhere in Europe. Youth development is nothing. How many Clubs in Nigeria have the kind of youth systems that clubs in other country have. All we have now are football academies struggling to draw a line between patriotism and business.
I listened to Sunny Okosun's Which way Nigeria sometimes ago and I have to hold back my tears. Why? Because every word he sang more than 25 years ago still ring true.
Let everyone who loves this country throw aside their sentiments and work to leave a positive and lasting legacy for the coming generations.

NIGERIA MUST LEARN HOW TO KEEP A COACH FOR A LONGER PERIOD, NOT TO CONTINUE SACKING A COACH AFTER EVERY LOSS. WE MUST LEARN HOW TO PLAN AHEAD.

Muminu, i have been waiting for your comments on the ouster of SE from AFCON 2012 and you have readily and predictably provided your golden contribution to the real issues at stake with impeccable professionalism for which you are known - unlike the half baked, jaundiced analyses of your other colleagues like the editor of sporting life. However, i agree with you to a fault. You seem not to have taken a position on Siasia the way you have done in respect of past coaches. Since you are one of the few sport journalists who could shape the opinions of those in authority on issues like this, i expect your direct opinion on whether of not to sack Siasia given all the circumstances that prevailed before and during the match with Guinea. For me, even though i am a fan of Siaone, I will not be disappointed if he is sacked but will only be disappointed if his successor is not better than him in terms of tactics, organisation, conduct and results.

watcher
nice words
to add yo what you ave said,i could remeber back in the day as a 10-14 yr old going with my dad, uncles and co to onikan stadium whenever bendel insurance came to lagos to play stores or NPA and you could see the love for the game from the fans, then can also remeber going every afternoon to unilag to play football on the handball court(alan shearer was my nick name) and you would have scouts from different feeder teams from all over the country there just watching kids play and if you are good enuff, you get picked for a trial(had one with bcc lions of gboko) but today,I doubt such happens anymore(been out for like 7yrs) and its a shame that our football has become such a shame.tgaribo west and a whole bunch of players honed their skills this way and we can all speak of the feat the great teams of yester-years performed.
People like keshi, odegbami and co played in the principals cup and they can not deny what that aspect of their lives contributed to their football
right about now,it does not even matter anymore if we sack siasia or not for if we do not take the drastic measure to fix our football from top to bottom,we will be back here 5yrs from now lamenting the state of our football, maybe then it is the likes of rwanda, burundi, eritrea, somalia that we will fighting for ranking with,if we remember very well,we were once tangling with no one in africa for the position of best team on the continent and then we started fighting with morocco, algeria, cameroon, tunisia for that spot(82-90 and also algeria, morrocco, tunisia during the years of odegbami and co) then it becanme nigeria, ivc, cameroon and zambia and maybe ghana around 92 to 98) then southafrica came from nowhere claiming local champion(lol),
Now pause there, what do you think the stupidity exhibited by the abacha regime in banning us from the 98 ANC caused this nation
That solitary act allowed this nation to loose a generation of players that would have been the bridge for the future of the SEand it was certain that we would have won that tourney and that would have really boosted placements of our players in very good teams, foreign scouts will come to our league to scout for unfound talents which in turn would have helped the league(I highly doubt that due to the corruption in the nation)
wow,I don yan too much ,will just stop here b4 my head explodes.hope you can see a sort of trend, the choices the people in charge have made over time is what has led us to this point,I dont think its the players or coaches fault to be frank, even yakubu and keita included,we as a nation has accepted mediocrity after the 94 team that it has been imbibed in the players who basically think all is ok with them acting like naija is just a dump where they come to play once in a while and then you have the NFF who will make travelling arrangements for a game in the most shambolic way ever imagined and you expect great results
in short/long naija has too many problems with our football and i sincerely think its the head that is most rotten in this instance -

Please sir,I am not bringing up the usual Nigeria permutation whenever we fail to qualify, but I have an intresting scenario which if proved then 1) Nigeria will play a play off with cameroon to seal the last best 3 spot. 2)CAF will be seen as being Mathematically wrong.3)Tunisia will loose their wrongfully pronounced qualification. I know u might be laughing now but let me start. There are 5 teams in Tunisia's group with a maximum of 24 point at stake while in other groups there 4 teams with maximum of 18 points at stake(though 1 group has 3 teams) Now Tunisia finished with 14 points which when calculated to the ratio of their teams will be 58.3 % success but Nigeria and cameroon has 11 point which will give you 61% success this is funny but please settle down and look at it again with your friends. honestly, sia1 has realy disappointed us. Changing coaches at every failure had cost us more failure. why can't we learn from our past error? b4 siasia was appointed, he boasted to have d key to eagle's success yet he failed. largerback did the same. i believe whoever would want to come for siasia seat will even say more and the worst will still happen. so why don't we just let him be for time sake maybe through consistence he can improve and perharps graduate to world class coach we are praying for.

The Problem is the technical committe of the NFF, they are the ones distracting the coaches, especially barrister green hounding them with contract say, contract didn't say. Contracts and certificates do not play football.
Well youn win some , you lose some, but Nigerian offtball needs a system overhaul, it must start with the technical department of NFF, in the past year how many technical courses have they organised for our National team coaches?
What is the dividend of all their meetings excedpt the sitting allowance that enters their pockets.
Siasia has dine more for our football than all of them put together ( save for Okocha and Ikpeba that have tried to an extent), at least there is hope for the Super Eagles, while we put the technical committe in shape.
What was the criteria for their selection.
I hear that might be a demonstration at NFF 12pm on Monday by Fans wanting the technical committee out and Siasia to remain, count me in .
If it is still holding pls spread the word here if it is for another day, we are ready.; -

Honestly speaking, this present circumstance may be the turning point to put things right once again. I want to suggest that Siasia should be given the second chance. I am very sure that if he is given the second chance he will work like mad. But then, what has been the contributions of background coaches? Do you think Simeon Kalika has anything to offer again? Or can't we ask Chief Onigbinde to come on board once again and Siasia to deputize him. I believe nobody in the NFF can push the old man any how because he is an authority in his field. May be after the next world cup which we shall qualify by God's grace couple with hard work, then Siasia can continue. If such baba can agree to come on stage, no player can mess-up with him, is either you are ready to play for your father's land or you forget it. There are lots of local players that can be mold into super stars. Remember the comment of the coach of England in the world cup match we played with them then. The coach said that he could not discern the actual pattern or style of play Nigeria played them. Let us cherish what we have. Infact, we don't need a foreign coach for now. Whoever agitates for a foreign coach is an enemy of this nation. Thanks.

Siasia is my personal friend but he doesn’t have any recognized coaching certificate. When I said that SIASIA should be exposed to 2yrs of coaching in a European club before taking charge of the Super Eagles, his supporters believed he was already matured enough to take up the job, now they are telling us we should forgive him, that he will learn from his mistakes! I like him a lot, but it will be unfair for us to ask the NFF to retain him when he couldn't even go close to the target NFF gave him, and yet we were the same people that asked the NFF to sack Amodu even though Amodu met all their targets.
The solution to all these confusion is for Nigerians to adopt a long term planning program whereby a world class foreign coach is hired for a 5yr long term deal, & about 6 top Nigerian coaches are sponsored by NFF abroad on attachment to top European clubs like Porto, Villarreal, Bayern Munich, and Man City, who will nurture them to come back and handle the national teams! If we are not ready to adopt this method with patience, then we'll continue to move around in a circle!
Siasia fought with Oliseh at camp in USA 94 few days before Nigeria lost to Italy, but Westerhof forgave them. Yet, as a coach; Siasia has displayed great arrogance, unforgiving attitude and lacks the psyche to handle the temperaments & egos of our players. He needs more exposure...Amodu handled Orlando pirates...Keshi handled Togo & Mali...but Siasia doesn’t want to step out into the outside world. He failed to win Holland u-20 world cup...Beijing u-23 gold...crashed out early during Egypt u-20 nations cup...lost out at Wafu cup...got kicked out of champions league with Heartland…and can't even get us to the nations cup!...and yet some people are rooting for him & his bad luck just because they like his face!
What was Emenike doing in the field when Kalu Uche, Ike Uche, Brown Ideye, Austin Ejide & Ahmed Musa were kept on the bench? Siasia has to receive a sack letter from NFF so that he will know he’s not above the law. If He had succeeded, we would have praised Him as the Messiah, so now that he has failed, he should also accept the blame. Siasia will get a second chance in the coming years. Amodu has been contracted 4 times, Christian Chukwu 3 times, and Equaveon 3 times. Siasia should go to seek some exposure & experience with an African team or with a European team. If He doesn’t step out now, the moment Mike Emenalo [Chelsea’s assistant coach] declares his interest; it would be too late for Siasia. Siasia only wins silver. We will surely come 2nd in our world cup qualifier group. Tell him to reach the final of a tournament…he will. Tell him to win?...sorry he doesn’t.
A good coach plays well and also gets the result. If you wobble & fumble your way to victory, even if you achieved the desired result, we will sack you. Likewise, if you play well, but fail to get the desired result or meet target, we will also sack you, period. You need both attributes; play well and get the results too. Siasia should do something about his bad luck because he needs it. It is luck that sustained Amodu.
We are not asking for Siasia to be replaced by another Nigerian [because there is no Nigerian Coach for now that is world class], we are asking for a world class coach with ICA and UEFA level 12 certificates, and perhaps, 2 yrs experience with a top club or National team.
Nigerians love to manage situations and issues. We never strive for the best.

I don't know why we nigerians like deceiving ourselves and not say the truth without being sentimental. Some of you now realised that our league is dead and we have average players around just because you love Siasia and you don't want him sacked (though already sacked). When Amodu said this you are all calling for his head, you never accept this truth because you don't like Amodu. Now that you man has failed you are now believe and want to use that to save him.

Mumini i commend you for your professionalism and vision. On Osaze i appreciate that you can tell it the way it is, the guy had a bad day period, and for anybody to attribute it to sabotage , i will say it was just to have someone to blame except Siasia himself. Siasia fans are not really Super Eagles fans, they are all about the success of Siasia rather than that of the team, they can blame a 5 yr old or crucify him before they see anything wrong in their god. My problem with the game is ,it was not just Osaze, we can talk about Ogbuke, Obasi , Emeneke , Mikel and Joel obi, how can that number of players mess up in a game without finding fault with the commander of the team? The preparation was shoddy and poor on the part of the coach. He created too much tension by hyping the match which in return made the players up -tight. They should had played in a more relaxed enviroment rather than the talking and bragging coach. HE CREATED THE UNNECCESARY TENSION SO HE HAS TO GO. I have said before innuendos, lying , exergerations and unfounded rumors is what is killing our football, and that is why Osaze will come out with such accusations.
