SIASIA: IT’S SWEET REVENGE

Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia celebrated his team’s 4-1 victory over Argentina in Abuja last night, happy that he has finally got the South Americans’ monkey off his back.

The Nigerian side’s dominant display and impressive victory was the country’s first senior victory over Argentina and Siasia, who lost two important finals to last night’s victims, was understandably ecstatic that he had got his revenge.

“I’m happy to have taken my pound of flesh from Argentina after suffering several defeats in their hands both as a player and as a coach,” said Siasia, who led the Flying Eagles to a 2-1 loss to Argentina in the FIFA U-20 World Cup final in 2005 and a 1-0 defeat to the same country at the Beijing Olympics final in 2008.

“It makes this victory very sweet and I must confess that it’s sweet indeed.”

Siasia, who scored the Super Eagles’ only goal in a 2-1 reverse at the 1994 World Cup, feels the team has now earned the respect of all Nigerians.

He said moments after last night’s match: “I’m happy my boys are no longer what people used to call “Super Chickens”. We are becoming super again and I’m grateful to the players that they rose to the occasion.

“I’m not disappointed about the way the Argentines played. They had to play like that because we seized the initiative from them and ran the game.”

The former Flying Eagles coach says he is now looking forward to the key Nations Cup qualifier against Ethiopia on Sunday.

He added: “We’ll now focus our attention on the Ethiopia game because if we fail to win in Ethiopia despite tonight’s victory, all would be in vanity.”
