Falcons Defender Wins Turkish League Title
Posted: Jun 15, 2012
Super Falcons defender Onome Ebi on Thursday won the Turkish League title with her club Atasehir Belediyesi for the first time.
Ebi captained her team in the final match of the season against krdnz Ereglispor, playing in the left wing position.
The makeshift forward player capped the occasion with three goal as her team went on to win the title with a 7-1 score line.
"Words cannot describe how I feel after this achievement. I am very happy and excited for my club, my teammates and myself."
"This is my first league title with Atasehir Belediyesi and I was privileged to captain the team. This means a lot to me and I am so happy."
Ebi who plays as a central defender for the Super Falcons played in the Turkish final match from the left wing position but says the experience was not a difficult one.
"I started playing football from attack so it was not new to me. I was just glad to play in any position for the team."
"I am very happy that I scored for my team but it is even more special that I scored a hat-trick. I thank God."
This result ensured that Atasehir Belediyesi will play in the UEFA Champions League next season, and Ebi relishes the prospect of making her debut in the Champions League.
"I have never played the UEFA Champions League. I could have played last year but my work permit was not ready so I missed it, but now I am back and ready for it"
"It means a lot to me to have played in the World Cup, the Olympics, African Women’s Championship, All Africa Games - every competition a player would dream of. To add the league title with my team abroad, and also play in the UEFA Champions league feels great. It is something I will cherish for the rest of my life."
Ebi will miss the Falcons' crucial African Women’s Championship (AWC) qualifying match on Saturday and describes this as the only damper to her joy.
"I am very sad that I will not play with my team [Super Falcons] on Saturday but I believe in them so much. They must just go all out and play like we never played them [Zimbabwe] before. My heart is with the team and I am praying for them as well."
Ebi adds the Turkish League title to the AWC medal she won in South Africa in 2010.
She has also won the All Africa games, three Nigerian League titles and two Challenge Cup medals with Bayelsa Queens.
