Team Nigeria Continues To Fumble
Isah, Obiajunwa Lose In Taekwondo, Wrestling
Women’s 4x100m Team Qualify As Fastest Losers
Nigeria’s woes at the London 2012 Olympics continued yesterday as more of the country’s athletes lost in their events.
Muhammed Isah and Amarachi Obiajunwa were the first to crash out in taekwondo and wrestling events yesterday before triple jumper Tosin Oke joined them on the scrapheap last night.
However, the women’s 4X100m team salvaged some pride for the country when they squeezed through to the final. The quartet of Christy Udoh, Gloria Asunmu, Damola Osayomi and Blessing Okagbare finished fifth in their semi-final heat but qualified as the fastest losers in 42.74 seconds. The time is Nigeria’s best this season.
Oke finished eighth in the final, with 6.96m his best attempt. Curiously, the Nigerian fouled four of his six attempts apparently due to pressure. America’s Christian Taylor won the gold medal with 17.81m.
Isah who was competing in his second Olympics after debuting four years ago in Beijing, China, lost in the men's 68 kg class to Jordan's Abulibdeh Mohammed 31-1 in the preliminary round.
Obiajunwa who had a bye in the first round crashed out in the round of 16 after losing to China's Wang Jiao 5-0 in the women's 72 kg freestyle event.
The country's other medal hopeful in Taekwondo Chika Chukwumerije, who won bronze in 2008 in Beijing, will take on Cuba's Despaigne Robelis tomorrow in the men's +80 kg by 10:45am.
