IDEYE: LONE STAR NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO STOP EAGLES
Posted: Sep 11, 2012
Dynamo Kiev star striker, Brown Ideye, who sat out the African Nations Cup 2-2 draw between Nigeria and Liberia in Monrovia, has described the Liberian team as a flash in a pan. He told RICHARD JIDEAKA that Liberia cannot stop Eagles' march to glory, and reveals he models his game after Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Are you disappointed that you did not see action in this 2-2 draw with Liberia?
Every player wants to play matches but everybody cannot play at the same time. I'm sad I did not play but I will wait for my time to come and I'll play. I feel sad that I could not help the Eagles.
What would you say of the result, do you think the Eagles were lucky with the draw?
I think the Liberians were the luckier of the two teams. I feel disappointed that we did not win in Monrovia because that was what we went for. We should have killed the game in the first half but we fluffed a couple of good scoring chances and they found their way back to force a draw.
The Liberians are celebrating the draw and promising to surprise the Super Eagles in the return leg…
That is laughable because I cannot imagine that Liberian side that can best be described as 'a flash in a pan' eliminating Nigeria from next year's African Nations Cup in South Africa. We shall not only qualify but we we'll teach them football lessons in Calabar.
When will you open your goals account with the Super Eagles?
I love scoring goals for club and country because that is why I am being paid as a striker. I have been doing very well at my club in Ukraine but have not been fortunate with Eagles perhaps because I have not been playing so many matches for Nigeria. I don't make promises but I want to score goals for Eagles, when it will be I don't know.
How do you feel being a member of this Super Eagles squad under coach Stephen Keshi?
Oh, I feel great being in this squad because I know we shall grow to be champions if we stay and work together. There is so much talent in this squad that the coaches I know don't find it easy picking a team for matches.
Do you see these Eagles winning the African Nations Cup next year if they eventually qualify for South Africa?
Why not, if the Zambians whom we beat 2-0 in a friendly in Kaduna could win the Nations Cup I think we can also do it. After playing them in Kaduna, I felt Zambia would do well but I never thought they could win the cup. They won the cup and I have this assurance that we can win it if we qualify. All we have to do is to put in our best to bring honour to our country.
Your club has been drawn in a difficult group in the Champions League, do you think Dynamo Kiev stand a chance of qualifying from that group?
I refuse to believe we cannot qualify from the group. It is a tough group but we are a good side and can beat anybody on a good day. I believe if we do our best and play as a team we should qualify from that group.
Are you under pressure to score in every match for your club in Ukraine?
Yes, I face pressure in every game I play but the pressure is not from my club but from me. I like to justify my wearing the club's jersey and for the money they pay me so I strive to score in every game as well as create chances for my team mates.
Who and what inspires you before any game?
My wife inspires me a lot. She calls me before every game and tells me to go and do my thing and she prays for me all through the game. Jesus is the name I call before every game and I get things done.
Does your family watch you play occasionally?
My wife watches all my home games with my kids and seeing them in the stands gingers me to try and do everything perfectly on the pitch and each time I score I dedicate the goals to them and celebrate near their stand.
As a product of the Nigerian league, how do you rate the Nigerian Premier League?
I don't follow the NPL much since I left for Europe but I am impressed with the products of the league. A league that can produce the players we have in the Super Eagles camp must be a wonderful league. I believe if they continue to do what I see them do in training and matches they would go places and better the lot of their different families.
How do you relax in Ukraine?
I am a family man and I either take my family out or we make ourselves happy at home with music and food.
How romantic are you?
Very romantic and caring man and my wife can testify to this.
Female fans or admirers, how do you handle them?
Well I have many fans and admirers but they know their limits because I am married and living with my wife, so they keep their distance from me.
Who is your role model in the game?
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the footballer that has influenced me the greatest; he is my role model and I like to play and be great like him one day.
