Mena of Niger striker Zakary Adebayor has reiterated his loyalty to Niger Republic and has pleaded with Nigerian journalists to stop linking his lineage to Nigeria.
Speaking through an interpreter in an exclusive chat with Completesportsnigeria.com at the team’s Gorilla Hotel on Saturday, the irked Adebayor fumed at Nigerian journalists and maintained that he should not be referred to as a Nigerian, stressing that he was born and raised in Niger Republic and not Nigeria as widely believed.
Although Completesportsnigeria.com investigation revealed grandparents were Nigerians who after their resolve to search for greener pastures migrated to Niger Republic in the 70’s, Adebayor insisted he has no link with Nigeria and has never regretted playing for Niger Republic.
“I am from Niger Republic and people should stop this controversy of linking me with Nigeria,” Adebayor fumed.
“Fine I know Adebayor is a Nigerian name but I am from Niger Republic and I am happy to play for Mena.”
Adebayor who is being chased by top Nigeria and Tunisian clubs was a delight to watch against Super Eagles at the on-going CHAN, scoring a screamer against Nigeria.
The forward however hails Nigeria’s performance in the tournament so far, tipping them to go all the way to win the trophy.
“The Nigerian team is a good side and I think they can win the tournament
“But Niger can still qualify from the group if we can beat Tunisia, which I think is not impossible to achieve if we work very hard,” he said.
