The home-based Super Eagles will take on Niger Republic in their first game of the Championship of African Nations on Monday.
After spending two weeks in South Africa, perfecting strategies ahead of this year’s edition which kicked off on Saturday, the Eagles will hope to maintain Nigeria’s unbeaten record against the Nigeriens.
Ahead of today’s clash, the Nigeria Football Federation reveals five previous encounters between both countries.
NIGERIA 4-0 NIGER (INT’L FRIENDLY MATCH/ 1965)
The first time Nigeria and Niger Republic met was in an international friendly match in Nigeria. The Nigerian team were victorious after putting four goals past the Nigeriens.
NIGERIA 2-0 NIGER (2008 AFCON QUALIFIER/ 1ST LEG)
The Super Eagles were grouped with Lesotho, Uganda and Niger Republic in the qualifiers for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.
The Eagles, kicked off their campaign in the qualifying series when they hosted Niger Republic inside the Abuja National Stadium. At the end of the game, the Eagles won 2-0.
NIGER 1-3 NIGERIA (2008 AFCON QUALIFIER/ 2ND LEG)
After losing 2-1 away to Uganda in their fourth match of the 2008 AFCON qualifier, the Eagles bounced back with a win in the reverse fixture against Niger Republic.
The Eagles won 3-1, and made qualification for the 2008 AFCON guaranteed following a 2-0 home win against Lesotho in Warri.
NIGER 0-0 NIGERIA (INT’L FRIENDLY MATCH/ 2012)
The Super Eagles and Niger Republic, met for the second time in an international friendly match in Niamey. This time, the Eagles failed to score against the Nigeriens for the first time.
NIGERIA 2-0 NIGER (INT’L FRIENDLY MATCH/ 2015)
The last encounter between the Super Eagles and Niger was in another international friendly match in Port Harcourt. And after a keenly contested tie, two goals from Ahmed Musa and Moses Simon, earned the Eagles a 2-0 win.
