Nigeria’s poor performance in wrestling at the Rio 2016 Olympics continued in the men’s event on Sunday as Amas Daniel lost to Georgia’s Zurabi Iakobishvili, leaving the bronze won by the Olympic Eagles as the West African country’s only medal.
Fighting in the first round of the 65kg freestyle, Daniel lost 2-1 to his Georgian opponent to crash out.
Soso Tamaru completed the medalless wrestling outing for Nigeria after he also lost to Uzbekistan’s Ibragimov Idrisovitch 13-0 in the men’s 97kg category.
Earlier Nigeria’s five women wrestlers all crashed out in the first round of their various weight categories.
Therefore Nigeria’s wrestlers, both male and female, failed to wait a sigle bout at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
With the conclusion of the wrestling programme for Nigeria, the country’s only medal in Rio is the bronze won by the men’s football team.
