Nigeria Out 2016 Olympics Boxing Qualifiers

Nigerian  boxers will not be at the next AIBA World Boxing Championships slated for Doha, Qatar between October 15-18, Complete Sports can report this morning.

Despite the fact that the championship is a qualification tournament for 2016 Olympic Games, Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF) is not moved.

The cash-strapped federation is still grappling with the big task of assembling  boxers for training ahead forth coming All Africa Games.

And while other federations are in the process of picking teams for the games which will come up in September, NBF will throw its own camp open at the end of June.

And because boxing is an open competition at the All Africa games – meaning no qualification tournament required, the Nigerian boxing team will have just eight weeks training ahead the games.

But unlike the Africa Games, the world championships has a qualification tournament – the African Confederation Boxing Championships (AFBC).

According  to a release by AIBA made available to Complete Sports, AFBC will hold between August 15-25 at a venue to be decided by African Boxing Federation.

30 African boxers, made up of 3 boxers per the 10 weight categories will fly the African flag at the Doha Championships.

When contacted, Nigeria’s chief boxing coach, Tony Konyegwachi confirmed to CS that his federation was preparing for the Africa games but claimed ignorance of preparations for world championships.

“I’m aware that there is a world championship slated for Doha this year but at this moment, I can’t confirm our participation. But you can be sure we will be at the next Africa games.

“Our camp is yet to open due to logistic reason, when it is time, our boxers will be invited into camp,” Konyegwachi a former Olymipian said
