By Izuchukwu Okosi:
The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Thursday dropped four places in the latest FIFA ranking released by football’s world governing body.
The Nigerian side, without a substantive coach since the 2014 World Cup, is now the 45th best national team in the world and Africa’s 8th best side.
Nigeria trails Algeria(21st), Cote d’ Ivoire(23rd), Ghana(26th), Tunisia(30th), Senegal (36th), Cape Verde (37th) and Guinea (41st) on the African continent (the countries’ world rankings are in brackets). Cameroon (48th) and Congo (49th) make up Africa’s top 10 ranked teams.
The Eagles’ opponents in the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifiers; Egypt, Tanzania and Chad also knew where FIFA placed them on world football.
Egypt is now regarded as the 51st best national team in the world while Chad is the 151st on the new ranking monitored by Completesportsnigeria.com.
World champions, Germany still maintains their leadership of the world rankings and are followed by Argentina, Belgium, Colombia, Brazil, Holland, Portugal, Uruguay, Switzerland and Spain in the world’s Top 10 best teams in the world.
The official FIFA website informs that a total of 135 ‘A’ international matches were taken into account for the latest edition of the global ladder, taking the total number of games evaluated so far this year to 217.
Of the new matches, 25 were qualifiers for EURO 2016, 26 were 2018 World Cup qualifiers (CONCACAF, AFC) and 84 were friendlies, with two of them being Nigeria’s games against Uganda (which the Eagles lost 1-0) and the one against South Africa (1-1 draw) .
In the women’s rankings, the Super Falcons plummeted by one place to become the 33rd best national women’s team in the world, but nonetheless, is still Africa’s number one ranked side.
