Gateway United of Abeokuta are relishing their away win on the opening day of the 2016/2017 Nigeria National League Southern Conference division, piping Nnewi United 1-0 at Rojenny Stadium, Oba, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
An official of the Olumo Rock city outfit, Rotimi Oduniyi says the performance of the officials, especially the referees showed that new sheriffs are in town.
"The NNL provided a level playing field for both the home and away teams right from the pre match meeting," a delighted Oduniyi tells Completesportsnigeria.com.
"This gave both teams the confidence of putting in their best, knowing quite well that no team was being favoured to win.
"The performances of the centre referee, Osifo Mark from Edo state and his assistant Umoh John were commendable, as they were not only fair, firm in their decisions without falling to pressure to give undue decisions to undeserving situations".
The Gateway United official would also praise the Tade Aziz led Nigeria Referees Association for keeping to their assurance of free and fair officiating during the NNL season and urges them to keep up with the promise.
Gateway United's forward, Peter Emmanuel's stoppage time strike separated both teams as it floored the home side, Nnewi United in their first home match of their NNL campaign.
