Non-league English club Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard admitted the club face a difficult task in their bid to sign former Nigeria international Yakubu Aiyegbeni, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Boreham Wood are in the National League, the fifth tier of English football, one tier below the lowest professional division, League Two. The club, based not far from London, play their home games at 4,500-capacity Meadow Park and finished 19th in the National League last season.
Former Everton, Portsmouth and Middlesbrough striker Yakubu, 33, featured for 60 minutes for the club in a pre-season friendly against his former club Reading on Saturday
Garrard whose side lost the game 5-0 to the Royals believes the prolific forward still has ambitions to play at the highest level and may not consider linking up with his team at the end of the day.
“Realistically I think he has offers and ambitions to play at the highest level. I will never say never,” Garrard told the Boreham Wood Times.
Garrad also explained how the former Everton man linked up the Meadow Park Club.
“I spoke to a friend of mine who is friends with Yak and he said where he was at,” he said.
“He ‘s back in the area, he lives about minutes away from the club and he was available to come in for training sessions .
“In terms of today (Saturday) it was nice to get involved. He is of a certain level and he is model pro. He’s been involved for the last two sessions and again today we go from there.
“The influence he will have on the youngsters is huge. We had two on the bench against Brentford and four against Reading. It’s a learning curve for them and it’s massive for them.
“He’s played at the top level on a consistent basis. He’s low maintenance, never late and he ‘s been a pleasure.”
