By Oladimeji Loko in Rio de Janeiro:

Nigeria's other representative in the women's singles table tennis event of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Edem Offiong, lost to Viktoria Pavlovich from Belarus 4-1 in the first round on Saturday night.

Offiong started on a good note, winning the first set 11-5.

But it was Pavlovich all the way as she took the remaining four sets.

Pavlovich won 11-8, 11-8, 11-7 and 11-4 to progress into the second round.

Earlier, Funke Oshonaike crashed out in the first round of the women singles, after losing 4-2 to Puerto Rico's Diaz Adriana.

Nigeria's hopes now lie in Segun Toriola and Aruna Quadri who will be featuring in the men's singles and also the men's team event.
