Oke Threatens AAG Boycott, Asumnu Ends Season

By Dare Esan In Beijing:

IAAF World Championships triple jump finalist, Tosin Oke, has threatened to pull out of next month’s All Africa Games in Congo if the Athletic Federation of Nigeria fail to refund his flight ticket for last month’s All Nigeria Open Athletics Championships in Warri, Delta State.

Oke was not among the invited athletes for the championships after he was written off as a spent force with the thinking that he would not get the qualification standard set by the IAAF for the Beijing 2015 event.

He however surprised his critics by hopping, stepping and jumping to a 16.98m personal season’s best and the entry ticket to Beijing.

Traditionally, the AFN pays all athletes who make the team to major championships but Oke’s case has now proved to be an exception, extending one of the negative innovations introduced by the present board of the AFN.

The board, Completesportsnigeria.com recalls, jetissoned the rule of no trial, no selection that has been in force since the 1980s by including in the squad athletes who failed to participate in the national trials.

While Oke’s case is not yet closed, Completesportsnigeria.com can report that sprinter Gloria Asumnu won’t be in Congo.

Asumnu told Completesportsnigeria.com after the 4x100m team exited the Beijing 2015 IAAF championships that she would be ending her season.

“No, I am not going to the All Africa Games. I am shutting down my season, ” she said.

The state of Athletics in our country is indeed a sorry one. Shameful…
