By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:
Former national team captain Austin Okocha has urged Nigerians not to use the forthcoming African Nations Championship to judge Super Eagles head coach Sunday Oliseh, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Speaking at the Glo-CAF Awards in Abuja, Okocha expressed optimism that Oliseh has what it takes to lead the Super Eagles back on track but insists that it depends on if Oliseh is given time and support to re-engineer the team.
He expressed confidence that the Super Eagles will qualify for the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon if all concerned do their home work well.
"There is no need to be ashamed of that we are ranked 66 in the world and 14 in Africa. We just need to battle back and make sure we get back to where we belong. Recent results have been very poor and we deserve to be where we are now," Okocha said.
"We have to humble ourselves and realise we are starting afresh. We shall overcome this setback if we fight collectively. It is a big challenge that can be won if we do the right thing and humble ourselves."
On what should be Oliseh's target, Okocha said his former team mate has all it takes to deliver support and encouragement from every Nigerian and that he should never be judged by the outcome of CHAN Cup in Kigali.
