Former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde believes the League Management Company’s decision to hold the Super-6 Tournament was a good idea, but a misplaced priority.
Onigbinde spoke to Completesportsnigeria.com on his views about the 15-game tournament which ended on Sunday evening at the Abuja National Stadium.
“The League Management Company meant well for the clubs. The Super-4 or Super-6 as some may want to call it comes highly recommended because it will put our (Nigerian) clubs that will play in the CAF competitions this year (Kano Pillars, Enyimba, Dolphins, Warri Wolves) and also the U20 and U23 teams in competitive mood, that I agree.
“However, as I always told Nigerians, competitions are not development of the game in the country. We are not developing our football enough in Nigeria.
“I’ve written series of papers about this subject and spoke to (Sani) Lulu about it when he was there (as NFF President).
“See, competitions help you to assess the level of development of your football but its not be-all about the game,” Onigbinde further told Completesportsnigeria.com.
The man who led Nigeria’s Green Eagles to the final of the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations made a recommendation on how the developmental plans can be implemented.
“There is need to have a Technical Study Group as is the case in CAF and FIFA. This Technical Study Group should study and analyse every league game in the country. Their roles in the game of football are more than that of match commissioners.
“At the middle of the season, all the club coaches should be invited to see how their teams have fared from the statistics of the TSG. It also involves referees, match commissioners, pyschologists, the medical teams.
This is how it should be done. At the end of the season, a similar thing is done too.
“I commend the teams that participated at the tournament especially the U20 and U23 sides. They played brilliant football, but we should do things the right way,” Onigbinde concluded.
The Flying Eagles on Sunday lifted the Super-6 trophy after an entertaining 3-3 game against the Dream Team XI.
Manu Garba’s team was confirmed the winners on Friday with a game to spare after a 4-1 mauling of Dolphins FC.
