Former FIFA and CAF instructor Adegboye Onigbinde has advised newly appointed Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia to learn from his past mistakes with the team.
Siasia, along with Emmanuel Amuneke and Salisu Yusuf, was drafted into the Eagles following the resignation of Sunday Oliseh who spent just nine months.
The U-23 Eagles coach was sacked as Super Eagles head coach in 2011 after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
In a chat with completesportsnigeria.com, Onigbinde, who coached the Eagles in 1984 and 2002, stated that he has always had his reservations when Oliseh was appointed Eagles coach.
“When Oliseh was being appointed, I did not raise objection to it but I was particular about his background,” Onigbinde told completesportsnigeria.com.
“And with the new people that have come on board, I believe they have better coaching pedigree than Oliseh. And that was my objection when Oliseh was appointed, question of experience and behaviour, those were the two issues I raised. And during his tenure, he exhibited lack of all those things clearly.
“Siasia has been there once and I hope he would have learnt his lessons. I remember when he first came, in a meeting with the technical committee, I cautioned him on a certain step he was taking.
“I have no reason to hate any football coach in this country or anywhere, but we are talking about the fate of our country. And just about two weeks ago, as if I knew, I sent a message of commendation to Amuneke.”
He added:”What is important is they getting there and doing what they are supposed to do. Where they feel that they have problems, if they see some people around them who could put them through, they should not hesitate because nobody is an island.”
On the appointment of Gianni Ifantino as new FIFA president, Onigbinde expressed confidence that the Swiss administrator has what it takes to move the body forward.
“I think he has got some experience in football management. He was the General Secretary of UEFA and he’s Swiss,” Onigbinde, who has done technical work for FIFA, said.
“So he’s been in the business for some time and I think he should be able to use that experience and knowledge to move FIFA and world football forward.
“What is going to help him is the nature of FIFA itself. And from what has happened of recent about Blatter and some other people, I think it gives an indication that FIFA is a solid body based on accountability.
“If everything goes as expected, I can see the new president maintaining a good name for FIFA.”4years ago My wife left me,because i was too WEAK in bed,but today she calls me Bed Champion. Now i finally discovered a Natural Solution that forces women to ask for more.
