Nigeria's Victor Osimhen has equalled the record for the number of goals scored by a player at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, Completesportsnigeria.com can report.
The lanky forward scored his side's fourth goal from the spot in their 4-2 win over Mexico at the Municipal Ester Roa Concepcion Stadium to join Florent Sinama Pongolle of France (Trinidad and Tobago 2001) and Côte d'Ivoire's Souleymane Coulibaly (Mexico 2011) in the list of players to have scored nine goals in one FIFA U-17 World Cup tournament.
Osimhen could however set a record for himself for the most goals scored by a player in a single tournament if he scores in Sunday's all-African final against continental champions Mali at the Vina Del Mar stadium.
Mexico will face off against Belgium in the match for third place earlier the same day.
The last time two African teams played at Japan 93 between Nigeria and Ghana . Nigeria won the final 1-0.
Nigeria holds the record for most goals scored by a team in a single tournament with 26 goals in the 2013 tournament hosted by United Arab Emirates.
They are closely followed by Germany with a total of 24 goals in the 2011 tournament hosted by Mexico.
