Owolabi, Tanzania FA President: Amodu Big Loss For Nigeria, Africa

By James Agberebi:

Former Nigeria international Felix Owolabi has stated that the sudden death of Shuaibu Amodu should be a cause for concern to the Nigeria Football Federation.

Also mourning the passing of the former Orlando Pirates coach, Tanzania Football Federation President Jamal Malinzi commiserated with Nigerians and the whole of Africa.

Amodu, 58, died on Saturday, just three days after the demise of his former colleague Stephen Keshi.

Prior to his death, Amodu was the Technical Director of the NFF. He was buried on Saturday according to Muslim rites.

In a chat with Completesportsnigeria.com, 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner Owolabi said Nigeria has lost another of its best hands.

“It’s unfortunate, so sad and quite disheartening. It has given everybody cause for concern particularly the football family,” Owolabi told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“It is a pity we have lost another gem. Amodu contributed to the progress and development of the game.

“I remember the time when he coached BCC Lions to lift the Cup Winners Cup, the first time a team from that part of the country would achieve such feat.

“He went on to coach El Kanemi, Shooting Stars and many others like that.

“It is so sad that at a time when Chris Giwa and Nigerian Football Federation are wrestling to see who heads the football body, when everybody is saying that is not what Nigeria needs now, we are losing very important personalities who ordinarily will help to develop the game for us.

“Unfortunately Keshi has gone and we all know his records as far as football is concerned, now it is Shuaibu.

“The good thing is that they have paid their dues and done their best for the country so they deserve to be celebrated even in death.”

He added: “I only pray that God grant them eternal rest. And for the family, God should grant them the fortitude to be able to bear the loss because it is not easy to lose people of such calibre. All their lives have been services to the nation.”

Meanwhile, Malinzi, whose country is in the same 2017 AFCON qualifying group as Nigeria, said Amodu’s loss was not Nigeria’s alone.
“Sad week for @thenff and Africa.Just heard about the passing away of Nigeria’s TD Shuaibu Amodu. May his soul rest in peace,” Malinzi tweeted.
