Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Ayegbeni was one of the players released by Championship side Reading on Thursday night.
Yakubu, who has had spells at Portsmouth, Blackburn and Everton in the Premier League, joined Reading on a short-term contract in February after three years away from England.
Danny Guthrie and Zat Knight are also among the players leaving Reading.
In a statement on their website, the club explains: “As we enter our third year out of the Premier League, the club’s owners recognise the need for (manager) Steve Clarke to freshen his squad.
“After a period of financial instability and with Financial Fair Play regulations in place, the owners are also making a concerted effort to get back to the sensible wage principles that have long been the club’s trademark
