Rio Blasts Mikel For Ibrahimovic Goal Vs Chelsea

Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has slammed Mikel Obi for his role in Paris Saint-Germain’s first goal in Tuesday’s 2-1 loss in the first leg , round of 16 tie of the UEFA Champions League.

Ibrahimovic opened the scoring after his free-kick took a slight deflection off Mikel to give PSG a 1-0 lead. Mikel had also given away the foul that led to the freekick.

Mikel redeemed himself when he equalised for Chelsea from a corner-kick before substitute Edison Cavani secured the win for the Ligue 1 champions.

Speaking at half-time on BT Sport, Rio could not hide his indignation at Mikel’s role in the goal.

“In the changing rooms I’m sure they’re saying ‘what are you doing?” Ferdinand said.

“If you’re not going to have the balls to stand there then don’t be in the wall.”

Rio Ferdinard just does not have any point highlighting only the mistake he made. What of the goal he scored and the overall display. Mikel was the stand out man in that match together with Dea Gea. Maybe William too. But Mikel neutralized Ibrahanovich. Infact he was mandated to injure Mikel so that the midfield will be soft for him and it was the yellow card that stopped him from carrying out his evil deed. The goal scored by Mikel is 2 goals and it is this fact that Rio should have highlighted not a mistake that he himself has committed during his playing days. Chelsea's coach is happy with Mikel and he values the goal which will count in the return leg. Of course, any fan will be rightly angrey with Mikel for unnecessarily fouling the opponent and then causing the deflection that led to the goal. How on earth should a professional turn when a free kick is taken. Had it been he faced the ball he would have kicked it out or properly block the ball. His turning his back while jumpping made him not to see the ball. But he scored and all fans forgave him. Nobody is taking about that mistake again. Light someone rightly asked, will he say this if it was Terry that made that mistake and then redemned himself? No. People are praising Mikel. Rio should do same.
