Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL side, Rivers United will no longer embark on road trips for domestic matches as they will now fly to match venues after striking a deal with an unnamed airline operator,Completesportsnigeria.com has been informed.
Rivers State government, sponsors of the club, successfully brokered a sponsorship deal with an airline whose identity is yet to be disclosed.
Boma Iyaye, Commissioner for Sports in the South South State of Nigeria said this is in line with the blueprint of the state government to make the club the best in the country.
“It's now official. Rivers United will now travel by air for all away matches to Northern and Western regions of Nigeria,” Iyaye said in a statement by Sammy Wejinya, spokesman of Rivers United.
“This is courtesy the Rivers State Government as we strive to become a truly professional football club.
“It is also a form of motivation for our players in the shape of reducing fatigue of as a result of long road trips to honour league fixtures."
Rivers United are currently in ninth place in the NPFL standings with three points from two matches in the two-week old season.
