Spain inflicted a heavy defeat on Liechtenstein in Group G on Monday night, thrashing them 8-0 on match day 1 of the European qualifiers for the Russia 2018 World Cup.
A brace each from Diego Costa, Alvaro Morata and David Silva, and a goal each from Sergi Roberto and Vitolo secured the emphatic win for the former world champions over the minnows.
Despite Georgio Chiellini’s sending off, Italy still went on to beat Israel 3-1 away in another group G clash also on Monday night.
Italy’s goals were scored by Graziano Pelle, Antonio Candreva and Ciro Immobile, while Tal Ben Haim got Israel’s only goal.
Euro 2016 semi-finalist, Wales made full use of playing at home as they saw off Group D opponents Moldova 4-0.
Gareth Bale grabbed a brace while Sam Vokes was also on target for Wales.
And in a Group I encounter, Turley forced hosts Croatia to a 1-1 draw.
Ivan Rakitic put Croatia one goal up before Hakan Calhanoglu equalised for the visitors.
In other European 2018 World Cup qualifiers on Monday night, Republic of Ireland held Serbia 2-2 away, Ukraine were held 1-1 at home by Iceland, Kosovo and Finland settled for a 1-1 scoreline while Austria beat Georgia 2-1 away.
