Switzerland stunned European champions Portugal 2-0, while Euro 2016 runners-up France were held to a 0-0 draw by Belarus in Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday night.
Breel Embolo and Admir Mehmedi scored as the Swiss got their campaign to a great start against Portugal who were without captain Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Swiss victory was however blighted by a 90th minuted red card for Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka.
France huffed and puffed away to Belarus but were unable to break down their resilient hosts.
In another qualifier on Tuesday, Belgium handed new boss Roberto Martinez three points on his competitive debut, defeating Cyprus 3-0 away through goals from Romelu Lukaku, who scored twice, and Yannick Carrasco.
In Sweden, the Netherlands were denied a win when Bas Dost’s last minute goal was controversially disallowed in the 1-1 draw.
Marcus Berg drew first blood for Sweden in the 43rd minute, but veteran Wesley Sneijder equalised for the Dutch in the second half.
In other qualifiers on Tuesday night, Bulgaria defeated plucky Luxembourg 4-3, Bosnia spanked Estonia 5-0, Faroe Islands held Hungary to a 0-0 draw and Greece overran Gibraltar 4-1.
