The race to succeed Mfom Udoh as the Glo Premier League goal king reached a new dimension on Saturday with the duo of Gbolahan Salami and Chisom Chikatara of Warri Wolves and Abia Warriors grabbing hat-tricks for their teams.
At the Warri City Stadium, Salami marked his return from a five-game injury layoff on a high by scoring all three goals against his former club, Sunshine Stars of Akure.
Chikatara who like Salami has missed key games for Abia Warriors in this campaign due to injuries also played a huge role as his side rallied to secure a 3-3 draw against Oriental rivals, Rangers, at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
Salami and Chikatara have now scored 13 goals, one fewer than the 14 already recorded by Nasarawa United’s Esosa Igbinoba and Tunde Adeniji of Sunshine Stars.
Heartland’s forward, Bright Ejike, has also hit the back of the net 13 times.
Igbinoba and Ejike however have a chance to increase their tally when Nasarawa United and Heatland confront Lobi Stars and Enyimba on Sunday.
Mfom Udoh scored 23 goals for Enyimba last season to pick the top scorer award.
The tally is the highest recorded by an individual in a season in the history of the Glo Premier League.
