Sampdoria new boy, Stanley Amuzie in an exclusive interview with JOHNNY EDWARD, shares his experience in Italy and how Cameroonian legend, Samuel Eto’ has helped him settle at the club.
Congratulations on your new move to Sampdoria
How does it feel starting your career in the Italian Serie A?
I feel delighted to have succeeded in my trials there
So why did you opt to join Sampdoria amid reports that you had signed for Sassuolo?
They were keen on me joining them and also I have a good chance of playing regularly with the team because that’s the only way I could keep my place in national U-23 team. With Sassuolo, I also did well and actually signed a pre-contract with the club but my agent was informed that the club said there was no space for a foreigner in the team and that prompted my decision to join them. They later freed up a space for me but it was late.
Don't you think the exit of Sinisa Mihajlovic to AC Milan will hamper your chances of regular action?
Not at all. My job is to impress the new coach that comes in. Heard former Italian goalkeeper, Walter Zenga is going to be the coach so I hope I get my chance and make full use of it.
How would you summarise the two months stay you had last season with Sampdoria from your point of view?
Yes, for me personally it was a rough start but I was lucky I met Samuel Eto'o there. I was always training with the first team and because often times he played from the right flank we always clashed and he was full of praise for me each time I wrestled the ball away from him.
His encouraging words made me settle down quickly, at that time I wished he was a Nigerian. On and off the pitch he was always there to guide me.
We both go for lunch together and he shares his experiences with me and I don't think I can be luckier than I’ve been having the 'Lion of Africa' tutor me at the early stage of my career. Also Ghana midfielders Afriyie Acquah and Alfred Duncan were also there for me. With them I’ve set myself new goals for the coming season and I’ll try my best to achieve them.
What are these goals?
Playing regularly for my new team and helping the Olympic team qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Talking about the Olympic team, how do you fancy their chances?
We have a good chance of qualifying if we maintain our form. We have a good side and our coach doesn’t stop in getting the best out of the team. He is a hard task master and I’m grateful for the chance I had in the team.
Thank you for your time.
