–AYC hosts confront Congo in make or mar tie
AYC hosts Senegal believe they will still qualify for the semifinals of the competition, despite their 2-2 draw with Côte d’Ivoire in Dakar on Wednesday evening.
One goal down at the break after an opener from Chelsea’s midfielder Victorien Angban in the eighth minute, the young Lions fought back in the second half to take the lead thanks to a brace by Ibrahima Wadji in four minutes.
However, Senegal conceded an equaliser deep in added time to Ivoirian substitute Chris Bedia.
With only a single point under their belt after two games, the hosts are left with no choice but to defeat Congo in their remaining group stage encounter, while hoping that Côte d’Ivoire will not bag the full points against pool leaders Nigeria, who have already sealed their spot in the last four and qualified for the U-20 FIFA World Cup New-Zealand 2015.
“I firmly believe that we will qualify for the next round,” Senegal U-20 coach Joseph Koto said in the post-match press conference.
“That is football. Those things happen and we must keep faith until the final game.”
Senegal will face Congo at the Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium while Côte d’Ivoire will battle Nigeria at the Caroline Faye Stadium in M’Bour.
Both games will kick off at 19h00 CAT today.
