Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba says he warned his players about Nigeria captain Ahmed Musa.
Bafana drew 1-1 with the Super Eagles on Sunday, with Musa scoring an 85th minute opener when he was allowed space to cut in and unleash a beautiful curling effort past Itumeleng Khune.
Bongani Zungu equalised in stoppage time to ensure a share of the spoils for Mashaba’s men.
“I said to the players before the game, ‘there’s this Musa – number 7 – don’t give him an area where he faces goals, because he will punish us’,” says Mashaba.
“We had him in the first half and he was nowhere; we had him for some time in the second half.
“When he started playing, he always comes in from the flanks and he did it tonight, he’s a very, very good curler of the ball.
“You could see when his foot hit the ball that it was going to cause problems for the goalkeeper.”
However, Mashaba says he is proud of the team’s efforts despite failing to get a win against the west African giants.
“I’d like to say well done to our boys, they played very well, it’s just unfortunate that we couldn’t win the game,” he says.
“We were supposed to have walked this game.”
The former junior international coach also says he came with a suitable plan to counter Daniel Amokachi’s suspected defensive tactics, but the finishing once again let them down.
“Our plan was to build up from the back, because somehow I expected them to come and play negatively.
“They were happy with the draw and you could see it by the way they played, they were happy to park at the back.
