By Sab Osuji: Ex-Nigeria goalkeeper and former assistant coach, Ike Shorunmu, says there's absolutely nothing to fear about the Super Eagles opponents in the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Completesportsnigeria.com
Friday's draw pooled Nigeria, Zambia, Algeria and Cameroon in Group B with only one team slated to pick the sole qualification ticket from the group regarded by many as group of death.
"I don't think there is any reason to fret over any opponent. Yes, Cameroon are good, Algeria are good and Zambia are also good, but the Super Eagles are also good," Shorunmu who stood between the sticks for Besiktas of Turkey during his illustrious career, tells Completesportsnigeria.
Shorunmu who was until recently, the Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer posits that what is important is the manner of preparation the team will get before the qualification matches, stressing that preparation is vital if the senior national must pick the group's sole qualification ticket for the 2018 Mundial in Russia.
Shorunmu stresses: "For me, the essential thing is preparation. Early, and adequate preparation will see the team through to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
"I'm confident we can make it. The current Euro 2016 going on in France has thrown up some obvious facts that you don't rate teams on their names.
"So, we must have positive mindset that we'll qualify. We must believe in ourselves, our individual and collective abilities, and be resolute .
"There's nothing special about Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia. We just have to focus. We must ensure adequate preparation, and the ticket to Russia 2018 will be delivered."
Against the backdrop that the Super Eagles do not have a substantive coach yet following Nigeria Football Federation's search for one even with the qualifiers around the corner, Shorunmu shrewdly Backs the stop-gap manager, Salisu Yusuf for the job.
"Who says the Super Eagles don't have a coach yet?
"Salisu Yusuf is a good coach. Is he not the one that took charge of the team through the two international matches against Mali in France and Luxemburg in Switzerland?
"He can do the job. All he needs is support. With support, I believe he is good enough to get the job done," Shorunmu emphasises .Uncover how I make $750 weekly on Facebook using never been revealed Social Media tools.
