Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Ike Shorunmu says the senior national team will miss the services of injured Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme who has been ruled out of the November 12 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Algeria in Uyo, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
The Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper sustained a hip injury in a Championship clash with Blackburn Rovers last weekend, and will not be available for the Russia 2018 qualifying home game.
Reacting to Ikeme's injury, Shorunmu who was part of the Super Eagles technical crew to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa which Nigeria won said it will be a big minus for Nigeria to play Algeria without the goalkeeper following his excellent performance against Chipolopolo of Zambia in their Match-day 1 of the qualifiers.
"It is quite unfortunate that Ikeme will not be available for the match due to injury because we all saw his performance against Zambia and that has brought some level of confidence to the team. So for him to miss the match against Algeria, it will be a big minus to the team," Shorunmu told Completesportsnigeria.com.
Meanwhile, the former Shooting Stars of Ibadan goalkeeper has advised Coach Gernut Rohr to ensure that the defenders that will be fielded against the Algerians are up and doing in the match so that they can protect whoever will be in goal, between Dele Alampasu and Ikechukwu Ezenwa.
"At this point, we just have to give enough support to the remaining goalkeepers because I don’t know who will be picked by the coaches for the match, but I will advice the Head coach to instruct the defenders to give enough protection to whoever will be in goal against Algeria," he added.
