By Johnny Edward:
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper coach, Ike Shorunmu, has insisted that the decision of Lille shot-stopper Vincent Enyeama to be left out of the senior national team should be respected even if his exit was unceremonious, reports Completesportsnigeria.
Enyeama called it quits after an altercation with former coach, Sunday Oliseh in Belgium last year.
And since Gernot Rohr replaced the former Borussia Dortmund and Juventus midfielder in August as the substantive coach of the Super Eagles, he has hinted that the 33 year old will be recalled if the Super Eagles qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Shorunmu who quit the Eagles in 2002 with Enyeama taking over the reins urged current Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr to keep faith in Wolverhampton Wanderers' goalkeeper Carl Ikeme who has five clean sheets in his first seven games.
“There have been several calls for him (Enyeama) to return to the team, but he has insisted and his decision should be respected even if the manner at which he exited the international scene was not a good one,” Shorunmu told Completesportsnigeria.
“He should be left alone! The same thing happening now occurred to me when I retired from international football.
There were calls from every quarters that I should return but I stood my ground, to allow other goalkeepers grow into the team.
“Maybe that’s what Enyeama feels as well. The likes of Ikeme, Daniel Akpeyi and Ikechukwu Ezenwa must be given a chance.”Jiji.ng the cheapest online shopping in Nigeria.
