Nigeria U-23s coach Samson Siasia has given reasons why Taiwo Awoniyi could not start the game against Congo in Port Harcourt last Saturday.
Siasia’s team defeated Congo 2-1 in the first leg of their African U-23 Championship qualifier.
Siasia explained that the gangly striker had a small injury before the game and that was why he started from the bench, stressing that Awoniyi is a good player and would prove useful to the team in Congo.
“Awoniyi must fight his way to the starting line-up because the understanding between Junior Ajayi and Oghenekaru Etebo has been there for a while,” Siasia told completesportsnigeria.com. ”
“Awoniyi has to fight his way into that team. We have good strikers I am very happy to say that.”
He revealed that the five players he invited to beef up the team will have to fight their way into the team, adding the list of players for the second leg will emerge from training.
