Following a superlative performance at the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles, USA, President Muhammadu Buhari is set to host the Nigerian team at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
Team Nigeria won a total of 71 medals including 34 gold medals and Buhari has congratulated them for their feat.
In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President commended the team for their diligence, dedication and wonderful performance at the games.
The statement read in part:
“President Buhari assures the athletes that the Federal Government and all Nigerians are very proud of their exhilarating and dominant performance at the Special Olympics in which they won medals in all featured events.
“The President looks forward to receiving members of the team at the Presidential Villa to celebrate their brilliant victories in Los Angeles.”
Top performers for Nigeria at the Games which ended August 2 include the Nigeria football team who won gold, swimmers Damola Roberts who won gold, Teju Ogunlela and Adebiyi Olatunji who won silver, Dubem Emuwa who won gold in cycling.
The 2015 World Summer Games featured 6,500 athletes representing more than 160 countries, along with 30,000 volunteers and an anticipated 500,000 spectators.
