Africa’s leading digital TV entertainment and sports platform StarTimes has announced Super Eagles legend, Nwankwo Kanu, as its new brand ambassador in Africa.
Former Arsenal, Ajax and Inter Milan superstar Kanu and the rapidly expanding StarTimes agreed a three-year partnership deal signed in Lagos on Thursday that will see Kanu become the new face of StarTimes PayTV across 12 African countries.
StarTimes currently operates in Nigeria, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda among others.
StarTimes at present holds exclusive television rights in Africa for major European leagues including the German Bundesliga, the Italian Serie A, the French Ligue 1, as well as the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup, where Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have been very impressive.
The ex-international will feature in StarTimes brand commercials, make special guest appearances at major StarTimes events and assist in promoting the StarTimes brand across Africa, amongst other activities ahead of the digital TV switch over.
Kanu will be supported by another ex-international, Jonathan Akpoborie, who was also appointed as sports programmes strategist and celebrity guest analyst on live shows.
Akpoborie, who was a huge star in Germany while playing for Wolfsburg, will feature as technical sports analyst on various StarTimes live sports broadcast shows, giving insightful analysis garnered from several years as a top footballer.
The Chief Executive Officer of StarTimes Nigeria, Mr. Jack Liu, explained StarTimes’ reason for going with Kanu and Akpoborire.
“Given Kanu’s successes in international football, his popularity is not limited to Nigeria alone but cuts across most countries in Africa,” Liu said.
“Kanu is an inspiration to everyone as his success represents a true Africa story; rising to success against all odds. He is a star the man next door can relate to.”
