Table Tennis: Japan’s Koki Knocks Out Toriola

Nigeria’s poor run in the singles in the table tennis event here at the Rio Olympics continued following the exit of veteran Segun Toriola in the hand’s of Japan’s Niwa Koki on Sunday.

Toriola lost four sets to two, to crash out in the second round.

The 41-year-old took the first set 11-9 before losing the second and third sets, 5-11 and 7-11.

He bounced back to claim the fourth set 11-4 before going on to lose the fifth and sixth sets 6-11 and 1-11 respectively.

Also on Saturday, the duo of Funke Oshonaike and Edem Effiong exited the games after losing in the second round of the women singles.

Nigeria’s only hope now rests in Aruna Quadri who will take on Wang Yang of Slovakia later today.
