U-20 AFCON Qualifier: Osimhen, Nwakali Fire Flying Eagles Past Burundi

By James Agberebi:

The Flying Eagles have qualified for the final round of the 2017 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after defeating Burundi 2-1 in the second round second leg clash in Calabar.

Victor Osimhen scored the first goal of the game from the penalty spot before Kelechi Nwakali doubled their lead.

But Ndikumana Magloire pulled one back for Burundi to end the tie 3-1 on aggregate in favour of the Flying Eagles.

The Nigerians will now face Sudan in the final round of the qualifier for next year's U-20 AFCON in Zambia.

The Flying Eagles had the game's first opportunity in the third minute through Lukmon Zakari who missed from close range.

Osimhen came close to putting Nigeria in front in the seventh minute but his effort was cleared off the line.

In the 31st minute, Chukwudi Agor had the ball in the back of the net only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.

Seven minutes later, Agor's strike from the edge of Burundi's box was well saved by the visitor's keeper.

And on 41 minutes, Nwakali saw his low drive from outside the box go inches wide.

Prior to the start of the second half, Orji Okonkwo was introduced for Madueke Chinedu.

On 59 minutes, Zakari saw his header go just inches off the target.

The Flying Eagles made their second change on 69 minutes, bringing in Gavi Thompson for Michael Kingsley.

Osimhen finally gave the Flying Eagles the lead on 70 minutes from the penalty spot after Chukwueze was fouled.

Nwakali made it 2-0 for the Flying Eagles after he converted a free-kick.

But with two minutes remaining, Magloire scored to make it 2-1.
