Nigeria U-20 women’s team Falconets got off to the worst possible start at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Papua New Guinea after they were smashed 6-0 by Japan on Sunday morning.
A hat-trick from Mami Ueno, a brace from Yuka Momiki and an own goal by Falconets Mary Ologbosere secured Japan the emphatic win.
It was Japan’s second win against Nigeria at the U-20 World Cup after recording their first win as hosts in 2012.
Momiki gave Japan the lead on 34 minutes with Ueno doubling it three minutes later.
In the 51st minute Momiki got her second, making it 3-0 and went 4-0 up following an own goal by Mary Ologbosere.
Ueno got on the score sheet on 62 minutes for her second goal and Japan’s fifth before scoring the sixth goal and completed her hat-trick.
In the group’s other game Spain thrashed Canada 5-0.
The Falconets will hope to bounce back from their opening day disappointment when they face Canada on Wednesday, while Spain and Japan will do battle.
