Majority of the home-based players invited by head coach of the U-23 Eagles side, Samson Siasia, are not keen on linking up with the squad ahead of the Africa U-23 Nations Cup in November and December, Completesportsnigeria.com can report.
Siasia is finding it difficult to put together a squad for the competition with most of the clubs in the Glo Premier League failing to release their players for the team’s camping exercise in Abuja.
The players told Completesportsnigeria.com that they are not sure of making the final squad to the competition as they believe the coach will give the overseas-based players priority over them.
“I’m not interested in joining the U-23 camp in Abuja,” one of the players told Completesportsnigeria.com on the condition of anonymity.
“The only thing on my mind at the moment is to help my clubs do well in the remaining games in the league season.
“Most of us know that the coach prefers the foreign-based players, so we are not ready to waste our time by going to the camp.”
Another player also said he was surprised that U-23 coach has invited a long list of foreign and locally based players to camp with few weeks to the start competition.
“I don’t think it is ideal for the coach to still be calling in new names to camp at the moment.
“It shows he doesn’t have a team yet and we don’t want to be used as training materials,” he added.
