Following Uganda’s 1-0 defeat of the Super Eagles of Nigeria in an international friendly at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium, Uyo on March 25, coach Micho Sredojevic will carry on as the Cranes’ coach until at least 2018.
Uganda’a football body, FUFA, confirmed a three-year extension for the Serbian on Wednesday, Completesportsnigeria.com understands.
FUFA president Moses Magogo announced the news in Micho’s presence at the federation’s weekly news conference in Mengo, the official website of FUFA and various sources confirmed.
“He has managed to get us some decent results in big games,” said Magogo.
“No coach has put us in a position where we only needed one point from the final game.”
Uganda have gone into the final game in 1993 against Nigeria and in 2011 against Kenya during qualifications to the 1994 Nations Cup (which Nigeria won) and 2012 AFCON (won by Zambia) needing victory to qualify but failed on both occasions.
Under Micho last year, the Cranes needed a point from the final game against Guinea in Casablanca, Morocco but were beaten 2-0 to carry on the wait for qualification to the African Cup of Nations since 1978.
At the news conference, Micho pledged to continue working hard to achieve Uganda’s dreams.
“We will ensure dreams of our supporters are turned into reality by giving 100 per cent as I have done before,” he said.
Ugandan newspaper Daily Monitor first revealed news of the three-year extension three weeks ago in the wake of intensified interest from Sudanese club Al Hilal, who had announced the Serb on their official social media accounts as their new acquisition.
“It is true Hilal contacted me but when that happened, I told them am under contract and referred them to my employers (FUFA),” the 45-year said at the time.
Financial terms of the new deal were not disclosed. The new arrangement means that Micho, who among others was tasked to guide Uganda to the just failed 2015 AFCON finals, will have spent five years as Cranes coach when his contract runs out in 2018.
Micho’s immediate task is to help Uganda to the 2017 Nations Cup finals with qualification starting in June.Jiji.ng the cheapest online shopping in Nigeria.
