Orlando Magic point guard Victor Oladipo, born to Nigerian parents, has been left out of the USA Basketball men's 30-man final squad list for the 2016 Rio Olympics, paving way for him to feature for his country of birth, Completesportsnigeria.com can report.
But Golden State Warriors' Nigerian-born star Andre Iguodala made the provisional squad for the Olympics.
Oladipo was included in a US Men's Basketball Team mini-camp in August last year, but he said recently he was open to
playing for Nigeria at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Nigeria's D'Tigers qualified for Rio after winning the African Championship in Tunisia.
Guard Oladipo, 23, is out due to a sprained knee.
Oladipo, the team's fourth-leading scorer, was injured in last week's overtime loss to Toronto in London. He stayed in the game and finished with a season-high 27 points. He remains a doubt for his team’s clash against the 76ers on Wednesday.
U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski included the duo of LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony who are a step closer to their fourth Olympics, and Stephen Curry is in position for his first in the squad to be pruned down to 12 for the games in Brazil.
"This selection process was difficult from the start, and obviously it is only going to get more difficult as we look to get to the official, 12-man roster," U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski was quoted on ESPN. "I'm excited about the possibilities this team has."
