I was excited when news filtered in that Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh has finally deemed it fit to extend invitations to younster Kelechi Iheanacho and old warhorse, Obafemi Martins, to be part of the squad that will take on Swaziland in a World Cup qualifier later this month.
Kelechi is getting his first call-up to the Eagles while Martins is being recalled after about two years absence.
My excitement was based on what both players will be bringing into the Eagles. 19-year old Manchester City forward Iheanacho will be bringing in youthfulness and continuity while 31-year old Seatle Sounders striker, Martins will be bringing in loads of experience and ability – ingredients which I believe will help Odion Ighalo to thrive better as Eagles new lead striker.
Iheanacho’s future prospect is very bright and though he is currently on the fringes at Man City, the quality he can bring into the Super Eagles in the nearest future is not in doubt, while Martins has continued to prove that his goalscoring ability has never been like a flash in the pan, as he currently has 15 goals to his credit in the MLS.
Once again, I say welcome to the young and the old.
